What do you think of a vegetarian wedding?

Original post by marymoon

I'm a vegetarian, so we were considering having an all or mostyl vegetarian wedding. It woudlnlt be boring stuff. We'd like to find a caterer who can make creative, yummy dishes!

What would you think as a guest? Would it not be your tastes? Would you think it was cheap? Would you think it was interesting? Would you just be glad the couple was expressing their own tastes?

Thanks!

personally i wouldnt be happy - maybe you can have 1 or 2 vegan dishes but for the most part people want meat - sorry

'for the most part, people want meat.'

Honestly, if I don't believe in eating meat, I don't know why I should feel obligated to serve it to anyone, and I don't know why it outs people out so much to not eat meat for one meal of their lives. it isn't as if you must have meat at every meal

marymon - do want you want. if you are against it, you shouldnt have to serve it. its like people who are against alcohol having a dry wedding. vegatarian caterers can create great food without ppl missing at thing

If you feel that strongly against serving meat then don't do it. If your guests know the type of person you then they might expect no meat at the reception. Don't do anything that goes against your beliefs. Only you know your guests, if they are big meat eaters there may be the chance that food will be wasted.

I hope you dont take this personally. As much as I agree that weddings should be personalized to fit the tastes of the bride and groom, I tend to disagree with a whole veggie course. Of course this is only opinion, but I tend to be devils advocate. As a vegetarian, its natural to want what you prefer and hope that your guests like it. But flip the reality and say you were invited to a wedding whose theme was a brazilian chuchuscaria. Its basically an all you can eat meat fest featuring all types of exotic meat. To say the least, although the bride and groom made the decision, they didnt keep the guests interests in mind. Again, its only my opinion - but I would have 2-3 veggie plate with 1 chicken and 1 meat selection. Good luck, and I hope it works out for you.

No, you don't have to eat meat at every meal, but people look forward to eating when the go to a wedding, most people order the steak or fish, b/c its not something that some people always have, esp if its a Filet Mignon.

I think that you could concentrate the CH on more vege stuff, and maybe have an extra choice or 2 for the dinner menu, maybe take out the red meat choice if you prefer.

Don't do anything that goes against your ethics about being a vegetarian. Maybe put it on your invitation and then anyone who must have meat can have some b/4 they come.

The thing with the all meat wedding vs the all veggie wedding is. At an all meat wedding, some people can't eat anything, at an all veggie wedding, everyone can eat everything...and most weddings ARE like that, they're basiclaly all meat, with maybe 3 things I cna eat at cocktial hour, if that, and I have to ask if there's a vegetarian dish (it's never on the menu), and it's usually just a plate of the side dish vegetables..i think that's worse....on one hand it's something everyone can eat, and on the ther hand it's something some people can't eat.

As someone who doesn't eat any vegetables at all, I vote for having at least one chicken or other meat dish at either the cocktail hour or reception. If you are going all veggie, I'd let people know in advance so they have the option of eating before the wedding.

IMO, I would not be happy either with a vegetarian wedding but that wouldn't stop me from going. You said, 'honestly if i don't believe in eating meat, I don't know why I should feel obligated to serve it to anyone'...
Well, you invite people you care about and spend a lot of money on the wedding... You should feel obligated to make sure your guests enjoy themselves and that there is something for everyone to eat. That is JMO, obviously you have strong aversions to meat, but that shouldn't stop you from having a few meat choices for people who don't like pasta and veggies.

I hear your frustration, hon. And I know what you mean about the plate of veggies. I think its unfair. But what Im saying is just like they put the vegetarian dishes on the very bottom of the menu, that's where you should put like one or two meat selections (if you choose to) But have your caterer make up some interesting veggie dishes and when making menus have your veg dishes listed as the first three going into great detail about each dish. But in the long run if your that opposed to meat being served, then do what your heart tells you to do.

Not necessarily true, you can eat meat you choose not to. Just like I could eat veggies, but if I don't like them then I'm sh!t out of luck and go home hungary.

I understand what you mean about the veggie option just being a plate of random veggies on a plate. Since reading your post, I am going to call the CH to find out exactly what their veggie option is. I don't know of any vegetarians coming to the wedding, but I will make sure they have a decent option.

i think it would be a great idea - very personal and different.
i was at a wedding recently where the bride is a vegetarian and the groom was a vegan...i was loking forward to a vegetarian wedding......but his mother insisted they have at least one meat dish.
i think if you stress to your caterer and work closely wirh them on creating a unique variety of non-meat dishes, your guests will understand why there is no meat offered.
personally, when i go to a wedding, i don't think...mmm, i'm gonna eat some meat today!
i say go for it if that's what you want!!! i don't understand the strong negative response either.....

Re: What do you think of a vegetarian wedding?

Honestly, I wouldn't be thrilled going to a purely vegetarian wedding, mostly b/c I have stomach issues and for the most part have to eat things that I know don't upset my stomach, and often meat is a 'safe' food.

That being said, if its an ethical question for you, I would respect you for making that decision, sticking to your beliefs, and not spending your money on something that you don't agree with. You obviously feel very strongly about it, and so you should go with that, and don't worry about what people will think-- its YOUR wedding, and it should reflect your tastes and beliefs!!

I definitely don't think it makes you look cheap-- probably the opposite, in fact, since you would be deviating from the standard dishes.

i think when you ask a question such as this you will tend to get alot of personal opinions. if you really dont want meat served at your wedding that is your perogative.

as a guest i would be 'disappointed' if i did not have a choice as to what to eat. i personally have a very sensitive stomach and i would not be able to eat most vegetable dishes for fear i would be in the bathroom the whole night.

I'm not a vegetarian, and would enjoy a veggie wedding. BUT, i am adventurous person when it comes to food.

I know if i tried an all veggie wedding, my guests would flip out- both sides are used to having meat dishes. i think 1/2 and 1/2 is a good compromise.

Ultimately, it is your choice and you should do what makes you happiest. But, maybe you can ask a few of your non-vegetarian guests (the hard core meat-eaters preferably...if any) what they would think before making a final decision. After all, they will also be eating this food at your reception.

I personally wouldnt mind an all veggie wedding because I LOVE my veggies and you can have pastas and rice, etc. But on the flip side, my FH hates any food thats green and so does his whole family. They are meat eaters, plain and simple. I definately would do what you want but how about an all veggie CH and a regular dinner menu (well a veggie meal as an option of course).

Re: What do you think of a vegetarian wedding?

I'm glad I got people to think about it for their weddings... it's something most people don't even think about, which is the problem. I've seen weddings where the cut out even the fish option to save money or whatever, and it was like...wow. I don't really blame anyone for that, I just think it doens't come to mind.

Anyway, an all vegetarian wedding doesn't mean like a stack of veggies and tofu on a plate,m it coud be a really delicious meal. I'm sure you've all eaten vegetarian dinners without trying to or realizing it. No meat doens't mean it's automaticlalt weird or rabbit food or something. I'm going to put some thought into it, but I'm really surprised by all of the aversion. I thought that it would be neat, and people would be glad not to have the same boring 3 choices

ETA: yeah, FH and I thought of having a 'normal' cocktail hour and a vegetarian dinner or vice versa

I agree. If you are strongly against animals being killed for food, (even if you aren't one fo those people that tries to convice everyone to follow your beleifs,) it seems out of character to serve meat to your guests.

'let's celebrate the happiest day of my life by slaughtering animals & serving them to my guests!'
doesn't seem right. . .coming forma vegetarian.
Would you serve meat if you hosted a dinner party?

I get the impression your FH isn't a vegetarian, but eats vegetarian meals with you. How does he feel?

Honestly, I'd rather go to a vegetarian weding than a dry wedding. But I'd understand that too, if the couple didn't condone drinking.

and you don't need to put it on the invites, unlees you want to. When you are a guest at someone's affair you are suppsed to graciously accept what you are offered whether or not you are expecting it & go to the Wedny's drive through later.

I went to a wedding that didnt' have choices, everybody got everything, but there were a lot of courses, & I tried everything, & ate most of it, but I'm a piggy like that.

Guests shouldn't be going to a wedding for the food.

And . . .Paul McCartney had a vegetarian wedding, why shouldn't you?
