I became a die hard preppy just as I was entering junior high. I had been watching the Facts of Life and reading the Girls of Canby Hall and I wanted to go to Prep School and I started my first day of Junior High in a plaid kilt, oxford cloth shirt, sweater vest, knee socks and penny loafers. My classmates here in Brentwood thought I had gotten on the wrong bus and I was supposed to be in Catholic school.
I embraced that fashion which just so happens to be considered classic and I can show you pics from 10-15 years ago and I am not ashamed of my clothes or hairstyles because they are pretty similar to what I wear now. I love the fact that I still wear my dad's shetland wool cable knit Brooks Brothers sweater from the late 60's. I LOVE it
Oh yeah, my college roommate and I lived by the Official Preppy Handbook!!

I got soooo caught up in the 'thug' stage!
I used to wear really baggy pants with those tight tight ponytails what pulled my eyes back. Always had boots on with the tongue flapping and oversized sweatshirts.
I was like that for about 3 years during hs.

In high school I bought all of my clothes at the thrift store. All I ever wore were beat up old bell bottom corduroys, flannel shirts, band t-shirts, combat boots and converse sneakers in every color. I also dyed my hair every 10 days or so. I've had it green, blue, purple, red, black, etc. I also used to give myself crazy haircuts.
At the time, I didn't think I was taking part in any kind of 'fad', but looking back there were a whole lot of us misunderstood teens dressing in similar fashion...

Remember leggings in the late 80's. I used to wear them with the slouch socks and sneakers. (Remember Reeboks?) I have to admit I wasn't that into the big hair. People used to make fun of me for that; everyone thought I was too conservative at the time!!

I'm 33, Italian, grew up in Yonkers, border of da Bronx .. I went through the EXACT same 'Guidette' phase you did .. Guidette all the way! Dated boys that were guidos mostly, the cars to drive were Camaros/Z-28's , Monte Carlos or Cadillac Eldorodos.. Lots of bright colors, leggings and loooooong fingernails. My hair was huge (I cringe w hen I look at old pics), lots of eyeliner and gold necklaces/rings/bracelets.
And of course, your b'friend gave you an ANKLE BRACLET when you were steady, that you didn't wear around your ankle of course (you wore it attached to another chain as necklace!)!! And diamond double-name plates, everyone had those!
FH did not grow up NY .. he has no idea what I'm talking about when I tell him about my guidette days.. he's a Michigan boy
