What has wedding plan taught you?(long)

Original post by magbride

Aside from how to stick to a budget (or not) or how to make your own pocketfold, what else have you learned about yourself or the people around you during this crazy process?
It's said you learn who your friends are....when close friends are a no-show, BMs act like royal PIA, mommy-zillas, etc. I haven't had much of that. I mean, sure, people, on occasion act like PIAs, but no surprises...
What I have learned....
I need to reevaluate my work life. I love my career but wedding planning has made it all that more apparent that I have very little time for myself. I can't do much of anything during the week b/c I'm up at the crack of dawn to go to the gym (the only time I can go) and home late-8:00 on a good night, whip up dinner and then start to unwind. I've been trying to write shower thank you cards and I can get through about 10 a night before conking out! Post-wedding, I need to try to institute some changes..for starters I'd like to spend more time in the evening with my man. This whole process also makes me feel like I sooo don't make enough $, but that's a whole other story.

I've also learned that our relationship is pretty darn good. Sure, we've had fights over spending too much mula on flowers, and the guest list, and etc, etc, etc. But we always end up on the same page.
I think the planning process is a good indication of how you'll handle some future stressors....all the biggies are at play--money, time management, sex (too busy wedding planning? lol), etc.

Okay, that was my random thought for the day. But seriously, what has it taught you?

this is by far the most touching, useful, and overall best thread I have read on this board. My own two cents

-All the irritations and hurdles of planning are easier to overcome when you have a good foundation with your FH. (we did everything together from vendors to diy to my shower!)
-There are people who should care, and then those that do. I worry about, tend to, and love the latter group. I treat the former group with respect and politeness but will not sell myself out for them.
-I learned how important it is to stay true to who you are and not who you think you should be, or who everyone else wants you to be.
-I learned that its a party. Plan it like a party, not like overthrowing a small communist country. Have fun, try to make sure as many people as you can accomodate have fun and thats it.

This is such a great thread!!!

Planning my wedding has taught me:
-Stay true to the vision that you & FH have of your wedding, don't let other people try and change your mind.
-I have learned that some of the people that I thought would be there to help are missing and other people who I didn't think would be there have been there every step of the way and then some.
-I have learned what an incredible man that FH is and that he actually enjoys helping to plan the wedding.
-I have learned that I am stronger person than I thought that I was.
-I have learned to try not to let the small stuff get to me.
-I have learned that I like making things for my wedding and that I am good at it.
-I have also learned that if things are getting to me and I need to vent that I can always count on the support & advice from the amazing ladies on LIW.

Wow this is such an amazing thread!!

I've learned that no matter what you do, you can't please everyone, someone's feelings are always going to hurt, just make sure its not FH

I learned to relax a lot.. I was a complete Anal nut with every freakin detail in the beginning and always worrying, and its going to be whatever its going to be-you can;t change it by worrying.

I learned that when I'm invited to a wedding, send the RSVP back ASAP.. People ARE actually waiting for them

I learned that I should have never picked my bridal party more then a year before the wedding... People change SO much

I've learned who our true friends are, as well as family members true colors!

And I learned that I should have set a budget for individual things, instead of an overall budget.. At the beginning I blew more $ then I should have on stuff no one will notice, but when it came to booking a band our budget wasn't there- in the end we did book the band, but we had to negotiate a lot

I learned I HATE negotiating!!!

Good post!

I have learned to budget myself now, whereas before I feel like I had no concept of that in my personal life.

I have learned how to handle stressful situations, and like someon above said..learn not to expect, I agree bc then you won't be dissapointed.

I couldn't wait for the wedding to be over so I could finally spend regular quality time w/ DH, during the planning I felt we barely saw eachother!
Between working, going to the gym, running errands, going on appointments.etc.

If I had to do it all over, I would probably would not have spent so much on certain vendors. We would love to have a house right now, but that's no way possible

Back to learning how to SAVE!

well for one it taught me that a wedding can be planned in 3months!!! its really not that hard, and no reason to be perfect or picky.
the bottom line is you are marrying your best friend, and the wedding will be beautiful no matter what.!!! thats what is important to me

lol-i'm such a loser, but there is something else I learned, and I all thinkw e can relate...

I learned that not everything people tell you is true or is going to happen to you on your wedding day. I've seen a lot of that on the boards about vendors.. And everyone is so quick to post negative things and pass on the word.. but they forget to metion that the limos showed up 2 hours late b/c they changed the time 300 times with them! things along that line

I learned about saving money, which is important because I stink at it!

Most importantly, I learned perspective from a lot of people on here-I don't disown friends for not caring about my wedding more than their lives, I don't go into cardiac arrest when a detail is off, and I learned that weddings bring out the worst in everyone. However, it made me realize that my goal at the end of the day is to marry my sweetheart and everything pales in comparison.

I also learned that there is a solution to every problem! There is nothing that can't be fixed-maybe it is not exactly the solution I hoped for, but as long as my FH is happy and healthy, who cares?!

JMO!

Oh, and I also learned the benefits of a healthy lifestyle-why just eat healthy and work out when you have a wedding? I learned healthy habits to implement for a lifetime!
