What is everyone's housing plans for those who can afford a house?
Original post by DayBeforeThanksgiving
We're 99% sure we're going to move to North Carolina... houses are way too expensive and if we rent, we'll never be able to save. In the meantime, until we find jobs in NC, we're goign to live home at my house - hopefully won't be more than 2 months. (with MOm and brother) has anyone else lived at home right after the wedding?

I just got back from AZ and we are trying to buy an investment property down there. The prices are going up but still way cheaper than here.
Brand new houses 2500 sq ft for $300,000 in a really good area with a pool. Taxes $1100/year. It's insane.
my FH's cousin just bought a house in Phoenix for $187K (nice house! I saw a pic). He lives in LA and bought it as an investment property.

We bought our home a year and 1/2 ago, the house needed work so we got it at a good price. My FH and his family did all the work (took about year to do all of the work) but now we are having a real hard time planning a wedding since all of our savings went to purchase the house and fix it.....so I guess I would have to say it either buy a home or have the wedding of my dreams.....we decided on the home. Don't get me wrong I love my house but I'm a little sad that I'm not going to have the wedding I always dreamed of.

You don't want to hear it but, we saved for 5 years to buy our house after we were married. I would say seriously for about 3 years. Also working 2 jobs each.

DH's parents sat down last year with us and said they dont want a big house anymore and they want to be 'snowbirds'. 6 months here,6 months in Florida. DH and I are taking over the house and we basically 'split' the house. They got an apt out of it and we get the rest of the place. If they didnt come to us with this, we'd be moving south almost definitley! Long Island is crazy! ($$ wise). Good Luck to you all. Have to go finish packing, Moving in less than 12 hours!

Being from Chicago, I'm still not quite used to LI prices... and I don't how or when yet, but somehow we will be homeowners one day because we're not going anywhere - though you girls are terrifying me! When I graduated from college 3 years ago, a huge luxury 1-bedroom was $900 in the hottest neighborhood of Chicago - it's worse now, but NOTHING like here. We're still upstate for now, but I don't even want to look for an apartment in the city - I can't get over how expensive housing and groceries are here!

We currently rent in NYC. We can't afford to buy in NYC and even if we did, I don't think I want to spend that much on an apt.
Our current lease is up in February - I would like to buy a coop/condo in Forest Hills or Bayside. If that's not possible, then I guess we'll just rent for a little while longer. I just want to move out of this apt!! I hate it!!! It's a 5th floor walk up!!
We are also looking for a co-op or condo in Forest hills. one of my patients at work today told me she was selling her condo in Forest hills for 200,000, but its only one bedroom so we are still looking.

My FI is in medical school for another 3 years. Until then, we're living with my parents even after we're married. By the time he gets out we should have well enough money to buy a house, even at NY prices. Esp with the addition of his salary!
Works for me. He's got awful hours and I travel a lot for work. Free rent, no utiliies - only bills are our cell phone and car insurance.
We are paying for about 75% of our wedding - so some of our house fund is going to that but we still have some time.

Well, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one considering moving or living with their parents after the wedding. Hopefully we'll both find jobs quickly in North Carolina, don't get me wrong, I love my Mom and all, but we both need our privacy...

Re: What is everyone's housing plans for those who can afford a house?
We are currently in contract for a house... the only reason why we are able to afford it is because we have both been living rent free since we graduated from college... so all that money got saved for our down payment! As teachers, we really cant move out of state, because most places like NC and Fla do not pay similiar salaries to teachers up here...

It's definitely not the best situation but of all the things on our priority list - we were willing to compromise our privacy to be able to afford our wedding and house. We'll see how long we can last!

Re: What is everyone's housing plans for those who can afford a house?
We were living together before the wedding and decided to sell our co-op and buy a house in Florida. The prices in the area we like were going up and wanted to get a good deal. We weren't planning on moving right away so we had to move in with his parents. Well that SUCKED. We were only there for 2 months when we moved back into the co-op (Hurricane Jean blew the roof off the house) and I was overjoyed. It was just annoying be to be on your own and then move back in with parents. But its better than living in a cardboard box on the side of the road!

My FH and I plan on looking for a house in New Jersey after the wedding.
