What is everyone's housing plans for those who can afford a house?
Original post by DayBeforeThanksgiving
We're 99% sure we're going to move to North Carolina... houses are way too expensive and if we rent, we'll never be able to save. In the meantime, until we find jobs in NC, we're goign to live home at my house - hopefully won't be more than 2 months. (with MOm and brother) has anyone else lived at home right after the wedding?

We will be moving down to Florida. Its WAY to much money to live here. I am a social worker so I intend of opening a private practice down there and FH can get transfered with the company he is with now, and keep the salary. We are going next month to check out Port Saint Lucie and Palm Bay. My bestfriend and her new husband will be joining us in the town we all chose!! Its going to be VERY hard because I grew up on LI, but its a neccessity at this point
ETA: Dottiemchugh (look above) is my best friend!!!

(and not have to pay rent to your parents?...) Some how have parents willing and able to pay for your wedding??? What? What? What's the secret...who can do this? I've got to know! HELP ME!!! (US)
You don't want to hear it but, we saved for 5 years to buy our house after we were married. I would say seriously for about 3 years. Also working 2 jobs each.

If we EVER get to a point where we'll finally be able to actually BUY something, it will most likely be in NJ. I don't want to move from NY but we don't have the $$$$$ However, it largely depends where DH will get his fellowship in two years. If its in LI, than we probably won't BUY anything for a LONG LONG while!

we too are considering NC as a new home town. i graduate with my bachelors in may 06 and this fall i will be applying to grad schools both local and in NC. it depends on which schools accept me and if i do get in to UNC school---we'll be moving! my fh would work something out with his boss where he does the same thing he does here in NC for the same $ (he already talked to him about it). yes, you do get paid less in NC compared to a long island salary, but the cost of living (housing, taxes, insurance) are soooooo much cheaper its ridiculous so it all works out. good luck to everyone with their plans! ~lacey

we both live at home right now to save money. i moved back after college, and he moved back after being in an apartment about 2 years ago.
we both have an ING savings account, which is the BEST thing we've ever done! The interest is 3% and we've saved a ton of money because once we put it in there, we don't touch it! (BTW--if anyone is interested in opening an ING account, FM me and I'll send you a link and we both get $$$!)
i would love to move back to VA, but he wants nothing of it so it looks like we're staying...
we're going to try to look for houses at the end of the year. hopefully we'll have enough saved by then for a tiny house. but who knows...

I used to live in FLA. and I did love it there, but the cost of living and houses are going up quite rapidly there. We own a Co-op now, but if we do plan to move off the island it would be to North Carolina.

Re: What is everyone's housing plans for those who can afford a house?
I'm selling my co-op and FH is leaving is rental after the wedding (obviously)
I live in Westchester and we've looked in Rye, Larchmont, Chappaqua and Ridgefield, CT... Even with the money we've saved and my profits from my apt, it's still hard to find something we like in a good school district less than 750k!! The taxes are the killer at about 12,000+ per year :(
I told him we should move to PA! He works from home and can work anywhere....

don't get discouraged if you are looking for a house on long island. we looked for 6 months and after about 1,000 open houses did we find one that we can afford in the best school district. we started by getting to know realtors and calling them weekly to see if there was anything new.. they ended up calling us when something came on that they thought we would like... we actually were the first ones called when our house came on and i saw it within two hours of them listing the house.. they accepted our bid an hour later.. that night there were 8 other bids placed but they already accepted ours.. there are reasonable houses out there!

We are in contract on a house...we are closing on August 24th! We looked for over a year & finally found 'exactly' what we wanted! No house work needed...We have tons of yard work but luckily my dad has offered to help us out with that! He has a wonderful green thumb

We just bought and moved into a house in Islip. It's exactly where we wanted, but it needs loads of work. It's really hard to concentrate on wedding planning when there's so much to do on the house at the weekends.

I wish our parents were helping! Well I shouldn't say that. FI's parents gave us some $. It wasn't much...put it this way it doesn't even cover the band. My mom pd for 1/2 of my dress but other then that it's just us.
We both work FT and pay out rent, car payments, inc, etc. ourselves. I haven't lived w/ parents since I was 16. We just save a lot! I NEVER go shopping. We do make decent livings so that helps.
We did get a good deal on the house but we just had to really save A LOT! It can be done w/o living w/parents or having them give you $. W just never see each other because we working all the time!
