Re: What is Precana?
you know... i was just going to ask the same question! I've always heard everyone on here talking about precana but i never quite knew what it was. Is it for couples who have different religions only? Is it for couples who are getting married in the church only?
As you can tell, i'm not very religious so i need a little help here. What if i never made my confirmation? Does that matter?

Re: What is Precana?
It is sort of a pre-marital counseling for couples who wish to get married in the Catholic Church - or in your case - have your marriage recognized by the RC Church. Since you will be going to the special inter-faith session - it is probably on a weekend, you will meet with married couples and other engaged couples and discuss issues related to being married - finances, children, sex, family, arguing, religion. We enjoyed it.
Here is a link for the Rockville Centre Diocese description drvc.org

what about if you're getting married on the beach by a priest and you're both catholics?

It's so funny you posted this cause I was just in the process of seeing if I can register online. Here is a link to a Pre Cana site I found:

A RC priest in good standing with the church would not officiate at a marriage ceremony on a beach. If this is what you are doing then your marriage would not be recognized by the church. Pre-Cana is required for marriages recognized by the RC Church.

Okay stupid question... but what does it mean if your marriage isn't recognized by the church? Is this a big deal? Keep in mind we're not religious. Is this basically just a blessing on your marriage?

Not being recognized by the church means that in the church's eyes you aren't married. But if an RC priest marries you and signs the license I beleive that is recognize dby the church. I would ask him, cause I believe the priest signature is what makes it legit for the church.

It's a big deal if you believe in the Church's teachings about marriage and if your faith is important to you. If you don't care than it doesn't apply to you. No - it would not be a blessing on your marriage (from the Church's standpoint) - only a Priest, Bishop and maybe a Deacon can do that.

A Monsignor is an honorary title given to a Priest. Usually they are the Pastor of the church. But a Monsignor is a Priest.

Speaking of Pre-Cana.... I know they address the topic of sex... how do you answer it being that it is the church and all... do you tell them the truth?????
That is what i thought! I am sooo confused. I did a search and there are a lot of postings. Peole do it, I just can't figure out why. I am not bound to anything I discuss with a priest... i am jewish! LOL

that is the most rediculous thing ever! that's like saying 'Christian Bar Mitzvah'
Pre Cana is a Catholic tradition and is not carried into interfaith marriages.
Actually there is--I took an interfaith precana through the diocese of Rockville Centre. If you look on their website it is there. They talk about the usual stuff in addition to raising your children as an interfaith family. My DH and I actually got a lot out of it.

It just sounds like a 'scam' to me since pre cana isn't free. did they tell you that you 'HAD' to take it or they wouldn't marry you?

Re: What is Precana?
there is an interfaith marriage preparation course. i dont know if it is called precana exactly, but if they are getting married in a catholic church and one of them is catholic, something has to be done.
also about the confimation question someone said earlier, i think you have to recieve it to get married in a catholic church. that is what i thought, but maybe they have changed things now.

my DH is Catholic, I am Jewish. we looked into what is involved in having our marriage recognized by the Catholic church and discovered that DH would have to write a dissertation to the church and make a sizeable donation. At which point he decided he wanted a Jewish wedding

You are suppose to have all your sacraments before marriage except for the last one (which is the preist blessing upon your death). But churches usually just ask for the baptism paper, so you may be able to get away with it. Ive had all mine, but I dont think my FH did his confirmation. He says yeah, but I think he is lying so I dont make him do it.
