interfaith pre-cana?? there is no such thing!

what is pre-cana

Actually there is--I took an interfaith precana through the diocese of Rockville Centre. If you look on their website it is there. They talk about the usual stuff in addition to raising your children as an interfaith family. My DH and I actually got a lot out of it.

It just sounds like a 'scam' to me since pre cana isn't free. did they tell you that you 'HAD' to take it or they wouldn't marry you?

All that my church specified was that we had to take precana--which is a requirement of all couples getting married in a RC curch. They didn't specify interfaith or not-that was up to us. And the price was the same whether we did the traditional vs. interfaith. I don't think anyone was out to 'scam' anyone else.

There is nothing that is a 'scam' about inter-faith Pre-Cana. Pre-Cana is not a 'tradition' it is a program. Pre-Cana is sometimes free-it depends on the Parish or where you take it. Your husband would have had to obtain a 'dispensation' not a dissertation. And as for the donation-yes there is paper work involved in obtaining a dispensation.

He did the research and found out that a $2500 donation would be 'appreciated'.

yes, it was a dispensation, sorry I got those 2 confused.

I didn't run into the donation situation other than the donation that everyone makes in order to get married. We also got the dispensation--although the priest took care of everything. $2500 is ridiculous-sorry you had to go through that!

what about if you're getting married on the beach by a priest and you're both Catholics?

A RC priest in good standing with the church would not officiate at a marriage ceremony on a beach. If this is what you are doing then your marriage would not be recognized by the church. Pre-Cana is required for marriages recognized by the RC Church.

Okay stupid question... but what does it mean if your marriage isn't recognized by the church? Is this a big deal? Keep in mind we're not religious. Is this basically just a blessing on your marriage?

Not being recognized by the church means that in the church's eyes you aren't married. But if an RC priest marries you and signs the license I beleive that is recognize dby the church. I would ask him, cause I believe the priest signature is what makes it legit for the church.

you are right, if a priest marries you and signs the license it is recognized by the church.

there is an interfaith marriage preparation course. i dont know if it is called precana exactly, but if they are getting married in a catholic church and one of them is catholic, something has to be done.

also about the confimation question someone said earlier, i think you have to recieve it to get married in a catholic church. that is what i thought, but maybe they have changed things now.

I think we're just taking the regular precana class since no one mentioned an interfaith one (or does interfaith not count for dispensations?) this stuff is so confusing to me!

That is not all it takes. There are a number of steps that need to be taken, paperwork done, etc. etc.

This is correct-in the eyes of the church they will allow the marriage however they want to know that if children are born they are raised in the catholic faith.

yeah but if a priest actually marries you, than I am sure he checks your baptism papers and follwos all the procedure. I've never heard of a catholic priest marry someone w/o going thur the proper catholic rules. And ther eis such thing as an Interfaith Pre cana class.. check out the site I posted earlier in this board...

Yeps, the paper we signed in the beginning said that FH (he's Catholic) would do everything in his power to raise our future kids Catholic and I had to sign something that said I was aware of his decision.

It's a big deal if you believe in the Church's teachings about marriage and if your faith is important to you. If you don't care than it doesn't apply to you.
No - it would not be a blessing on your marriage (from the Church's standpoint) - only a Priest, Bishop and maybe a Deacon can do that.

You can always, at a later point, get your marriage blessed by the church (my friend had to do it to get her son baptized, they had an outdoor ceremony as well).

Re: What is Precana?

I wouldn't say you can 'Always' have your marriage blessed at a later time. It depends on the circumstances. If you don't have a good reason for not doing it right the first time-they can tell you no. For example-if you say 'oh my dream was to marry in a vineyard' that would not be a good reason. It depends on the situation.

WHAT??? so the purpose of the pre cana is so that a priest can insist that our children be raised Catholic and guilt my FI into it??? We already discussed how our children were to be raised and it was very important to me that they be raised Jewish. I will not go to the pre cana if they are going to pursue the issue that our children be raised Catholic. Now I am concerned.

I was concerned about that too going in to pre-cana, but with my experience that did not happen. On the other hand the priest that marries you may not do so unless you comit to raising your children catholic.

If you plan on getting married in a church and having the marriage recognized ( which will only happen if you both are catholic) then yes you need to ensure that when raising your children they be raised catholic-

To me the whole point of being married in chuch would be to have our union recognize in our faith and to have our children raised that way-I am missing one sacrament and spend 8 hours a week in church so I can marry in the church -
Pre cana is pre marriage counseling-they want to make sure that you are compatible, that you are both aware of any possible situation that may alter your ability to carry out your wedded duties and that morally you have similar values...
Particular priests and parishes have different rules and feelings about interfaith marriages-

Just wanted to say that your marriage can be recognized if only one of you is Catholic. So the above is incorrect. In our case we got a dispensation...our marriage is receognized by the church nonetheless.

I believe that I was speaking in terms on someone not taking extra steps such as a dispensation
