If you plan on getting married in a church and having the marriage recognized ( which will only happen if you both are catholic) then yes you need to ensure that when raising your children they be raised catholic-
Just wanted to say that your marriage can be recognized if only one of you is Catholic. So the above is incorrect. In our case we got a dispensation...our marriage is receognized by the church nonetheless.
I believe that I was speaking in terms on someone not taking extra steps such as a dispensation
Didn't understand it as such...just want to get it all out there and not scare anyone away. I have to say that most churches were pretty inflexible so I consider myself very blessed to have found such a great church and wonderful Monsignor...the whole process was painless and beautiful. He counseled us for almost 6 months...I still miss him.

according to my uncle who is a MSGR-marriage outside of a church is a marriage that is performed by a priest who is not in good standing with the church-check with your priest and see or check with the local parish-
I would not freak out-unless you follow religion on a daily then you only need to get through the ceremony.

Tracy2246 - Priests will co-officiate at inter-faith ceremonies all the time and those marriages ARE recognized by the Church. Proper dispensation must be obtained.

I know only from MY experiences with having to finalize a sacrament and having a close family member as a MNSGR-

Please see this link to the USCCB (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops) website, FAQ #4. This issue is also addressed in the Cathecism, whiich I am sure you are familar with if you are going through RCIA.

We have a good family friend who is a RC priest, and I was told by him that in order for a marriage to be recognized in the RC church it has to be performed IN the church building itself--interfaith or not it would be recognized by the church as long as it is performed in a church building. If you get married at the hall or on the beach, etc... chances are that the priest is either not catholic or not in good standing in the RC church, but is still allowed by NY state to marry you. I am not sure what the regulations are for Rabbi's. If you are confused or unsure, I would speak to whomever is officiating your ceremony to get clarification and peace of mind. hope this helps.

Re: What is Precana?
I would like to get married in a church. I am not super religious but I was brought up catholic. My fiance is from England and he was baptised but that is it. I have two questions.
1. Does he have to get confirmed etc....basically what does he have to do in order for us to get married in a church
2. Our reception hall is way out east can we get married at any church or does it have to be my local church.
Thanks

1. Technically you should have been baptized, first communion and Confirmed before you get married in the church. But most churches ask for proof of baptism.
2.They will make you take the pre cana classes. Some churches are particular that you be part of their parish, while others will marry you. You would have to look around at churches & see.

Re: What is Precana?
Pre Cana is just for couples. It's not a sharing thing for a group of couple to share their answers. In most cases the Priest does not attend these, but older couples who have been with the Church run the show. My FH and I received a book with the other 5 couples in our session and the couple running it give us an intro to each section, talk about their experiences and then have us divide out across the room and we each fill out a paper separately, then we get together with our significant other to compare our answers and talk about it. The only sexual conversation you have is with your FH, no one else. Be honest with yourself and your FH and everything will be fine. One of our topics also asked couples to evaluate the reasons they moved in with one another before marriage. It's actually a lot of fun to go through and makes the relationship stronger! Sorry for carrying on!

Re: What is Precana?
Okay well i just thought i'd let some of you know... that i talked to the priest last night.
He said that over the next 9 months we will be meeting 2 or 3 times, which would be our substitute for precana.
He also said that our marriage will be recognized by the church (even though we're getting married on the beach) and he will even give us a piece of paper with a seal on it to verify this. Or something like that.
So i'm not sure where some of you are getting your information from and maybe state to state is different. Or maybe the rules have changed a little. I don't know. But i would check with your priest if you have any questions.

Re: What is Precana?
Someone recommended Father Lasante and Rabbi Block to me as well, but I have no idea where to find them? Do you have their information? Thank you!
