What is shabby chic?

I've heard the term a zillion times but I have no idea what it's supposed to be.

It's sometimes used to describe what I'd also call an English Cottage or Country Cottage look. You usually see comfy overstuffed furniture with slipcovers, often a mix of fabrics, and an eclectic mix of odds and ends tables, knick-knack and accessories.
