I give a min of 200...But it really depends on your relationship with the
person and how much you can afford

I read somewhere in an etiquette book that you should give what the price of your plate was at the reception. I guess that must be some general rule or something

it depends on our relationship w/ the couple. friends, but not great ($250) close friends ($400).

I also give about $200 for the couple, more if its a close relative.

You're 'supposed' to cover your plate, but since weddings have gotten so expensive that's not always possible. I think a minimum of $200 is appropriate. I think you should probably give more if you're colse with the couple or if you could afford it.

We (my parents, bro, fh, and myself) give a little over $500.00. We go by the rule of covering our plates and giving extra $$.

I give $200 from me and FH. I gave $300 at my friend's wedding last weekend though because she's a very close friend and FH's cousin.

I think I would try to give more than the $200 if I could afford it. But c'mon, this is the fourth wedding in 2 months. I'm not going to go bankrupt over it.

I hate when people do this IMO. I think it's really tacky to base a present on where the wedding is. Chances are the people who are having less of a wedding are the ones who really need the money more! I think that you should give whatever you would normally give regardless of the place.

I'm sorry, this is not an attack on you Julestrd, this is just one of my biggest pet peeves.

I think, if you're going as a couple, at least $175-200 and possibly more if you're close with the person.

I agree. I think the wedding we went to last week was $40-$50 per plate, but I still gave $300 because it was someone close. At the wedding next week, I think it is $90 per plate, but I'm still giving $200 from both of us. And if someone wants to spend $150 pp, that shouldn't mean I have to give them more money because they decided on a more expensive wedding.

I also give according to my relation to the couple. Basically we give 250.00 to anyone. If I am in the party--300.00. My future husband and I make it a deal where if it is his friend getting married, he pays...if it is mine I pay. If it is both of ours.....we split it. This has been great, especially since we went to 5 weddings last year, and have 4 this year.

I can see your point about basing the present on the wedding. I think a lot of this present giving also stems on how much you can afford.

FH and i normally give 150 each so 300 all together...but if we're closer to them...then we do more...but it can get difficult if the wedding hits when the bills hit...

I don't think this is true. I've heard that you don't even have to give a gift at weddings. I hope others haven't heard this--espeically those I'm inviting to my wedding
You give what you can afford. That's really the bottom line.

everyone's situations are different too...last year we had some MAJOR financial issues and we went to two weddings ( an aunt and a very close friend) where we could only afford $150 from both of us. When are having better financial times we like to give $200-$250 so it all depends, and I judge NO_ONE for it...heck Im the one that said I wouldnt even be mad if I didnt get a card, if someone cant afford it , they can't...some people can give more, some can't, its just a way of life....

I am the same way with people coming to our wedding since all of my family is coming from Tx.

I believe in giving what you can afford, but my friend's mom of the one who got married last week, said the guy's side of the family was reallllly cheap. One of them gave $20 in an unsigned card. Some gave nothing. And they do have money. That's a little classless.
