Re: What is the going rate to give to a couple getting married??

I generally give $100 pp, so $200 because I never go to weddings alone, lol. I give more only if I can afford it and if the person's close. (so the couple that's getting married the week before me will not be getting what they would have gotten if they got married last year or a month after me!) When I'm in the BP we give $300 or more.

Re: What is the going rate to give to a couple getting married??

That's tough. I have given as low as $100 (for my cousin who eloped, but had a party at his condo when he got back).

But, I've given as high as $300 (in addition to flying to Italy for the wedding, because it was a clost relative).

So, I guess I give based on #1 how close I am to the person and #2 what kind of wedding (ceremony and reception versus party at the condo after eloping)

I think you should just give what you can afford.

Re: What is the going rate to give to a couple getting married??

It depends. Family get's $500 and friends get $200. But if our friends are like family then closer to $500. We have given more at times also. It depends on our relationship with them.

Re: What is the going rate to give to a couple getting married??

Okay, here's what Emily Post's Wedding Etiquette has to say:

Is there a special formula for calculatin how much a guest should spend on a gift?

Any formula wherein a wedding gift should cost at least as much as the bride and groom are spending on entertaining each person at the reception is a myth. Such extravagance is impractical, uncalled for, and ostentatious- and therefore in poor taste. Fortunately most guests know they have no such obligation. The cost of a gift should be based on the guest's affection for and relationship with the bride, groom, or their families. No one should feel pressed to spen more than can be afforded. That doesn't mean, however, that guests have the green light to be stingy in purchasing agift. Each guest should simply give what he or she can afford, along with love and best wishes.

So it's a myth. I usually give $125 to people I'm not that close with, and $250 to people I'm closer with. This is based on the last few weddings I've been to. But that's even a real hardship for me to give that much.

Re: What is the going rate to give to a couple getting married??

when i go to a wedding i try to cover my plate and my FI.
You don't have to bring a gift to an engagement party... i ahve never heard of not bringing a gift to a wedding ... how tacky

i have heard you should make back about what you spendor atleast half or something.... this never happens

most people i know try to cover their plate
a couple that has a wedding at $25,000
is not going to get in gifts the same amount as a person that is throwing a wedding for $65,000

but again... JMO
you give what ever you think.. I give more if the person is close

Re: What is the going rate to give to a couple getting married??

My friends and I have discussed that we will be giving $300 per couple to each other, ot doesn't matter where it is, unless we are in the wedding party and then it's up to our discretion

Re: What is the going rate to give to a couple getting married??

IMO It doesnt matter how much the couple spends. I give what I can afford. Even to give 200.00 a couple is a hardship for us, but we feel its the right thing to do.
