What is the normal monthly weight gain for pregos??

I saw my doctor yesterday for my 24 week visit and I gained 4 lbs since last month's visit. I thought this was normal, 3-4 lbs a month. But, not only did I get a lecture, he suggested that I see a dietician as well!! I consider myself a very healthy eater - no junk food, candy or empty calories. Is he insane or am I eating too much? I think I've gained about 15 lbs so far. Is that unhealthy?

Oh my goodness... you're so lucky! The past 4 months I've gained 7 lbs each month! I've gained twice that amount! The first doctor I saw said to watch what I eat, and the last couple of times, I saw a different doctor, and he said that every woman's PG is different. He never said anything about my weight. He was a lot nicer. But no... you are gaining at the normal weight. You have nothing to worry about. I would see a different doctor! JMO!

Demetra ....

Please do not feel bad about this! A 3-4 pound weight gain is average & very normal!!! And this is only a guideline! Your body will gain what it needs to support you + baby's growing needs. I think this dr has got some nerve to suggest a dietician ... especially considering how well you are eating & I'm sure you look fabulous.

Don't give this another thought ... I'm jealous. I wish I could say the same about being so good with food.

I don't personally think that you have gained too much, especially if you really are eating healthy.

I have gained more weight than you and I am only 18 wks preggo...and my Dr is fine with it. I think that it seems to depend on the Dr and I personally am thankful that my Dr is not crazy over the idea of gaining 20lbs for a pregnancy.

I am sure that you look *great*!!!

Nancy

PS My Dr does recommend about a 1 lb per week...

In the first 5-6 I put on 2-3lbs per month, then I had my awful GD month that packed on a lot more than that in one month but since getting diagnosed and having it under control I am now at 4lbs per month, in my last trimester.

There are many reasons that some doctors do not want to see certain women gain certain amounts of weight during pregnancy. It has very little to do with looking good. I know that my midwife said that some women who have smaller size pelvics have a better, easier delivery when they have put on min. amounts of weight. Perhaps your doctor is concerned that in your last trimester, when we put on a lot more weight per month, that you will gain too much? Why not discuss this with him? He may have a valid reason for his concern.

I think that is the thing with my doctor too michele. I think she's concerned that i have been gaining a bit too much per month, and that I am starting my last tri-mester now where I can expect to pack on even more per week than before. I have gained 22 pounds total. I am 27 weeks pregnant. I didn't gain more than 4 in the first trimester so I did a lot of chomping and gaining in the second!!!! oh well...what's done is done....

Everyone is different and I swear I hate when doctor's do this to women. I can see something over the top but it doesn't sound like it to me. EVERY WOMEN'S BODY IS DIFFERENT..please remember that ladies so not to compare yourselves to the 'norm'.

As long as you are eating healthy and more importantly your baby is healthy...just continue doing what you are doing and enjoy your pregnancy!!!!!!

well said Camille. It's so true. We are all such different shapes and sizes when we start out..why would we all gain the exact same amount in the exact same amount of weeks, etc. It is truly aggravating. i got so annoyed with my doctor last week - it's just dropping that in there when i am only 2 pounds 'above' the 'suggested' weight gain. She forgot to realize the fact that I still only weigh 132 pounds which last time I checked was not a dangerous weight for a person of 5'1'. I mean I can understand if I started at 110 and was 195 right now...otherwise..please....

I packed on extra pounds early on. They warned me to cut down on carbs and sugars. However, in my last two appointments they were congratulating me on who well I did.

I was told that it would be normal to gain 3-5 lbs. the first tri and a 1/2 lb- 1 lb. a week in the 2nd tri. So according to my doctor, you'd be right on track for 24 weeks. Maybe on the high end but not enough to say you've gained too much. I think 15 lbbs. at 24 weeks is really good!

Thanks for the support! It's bad enough to see my body changing so much during pregnancy. But to have to hear that things are so bad I should see a dietician is really depressing.

My doctors all told me to EXPECT a jump in weight gain in the second trimester, b/c you are feeling better (after 1st tri morning sickness) and your appetite often returns to normal (or some women find they are even hungrier!).

I wouldn't sweat it...I think you are right on track, and unless you have other health issues/concerns, just keep feeding that baby and helping him/her to thrive!
