what kind of computer do you have? need help in ordering one..

my future ex is coming this weekend to pack up all of his stuff and move out. This is his computer.. I am going to try to work a deal with him at the mediator tomorrow for me to keep it but who knows. He says he needs it for his masters. i might want to get my own anyway. a brand new one. This one is a dell and they seem pretty decent and well priced. But I have no idea what to get and add on when it comes to customizing..
any suggestions?

Hey Kristi, Good Luck tomorrow!! When Mike ordered our computer he called Dell and they helped talk him through everything that we would possibly want without going broke. We got a great deal and our computer has everything we wanted!! Go to their website and look through what they have and give them a call!!

I just ordered a Dell yesterday. I got the Dell Dimension 4600 with 256MB. I am going to school for my masters and told the sales rep what I needed, programs, etc. They were very helpful and with everything...including $100. rebate, it was $1,300. I added MS Office...so that pushed the price up. You can get a basic desktop for under a thousand.

Good luck!

I believe Dell has a good reputation. Right now I am working on an Apple MAC Powerbook, 12 inch! It's DH toy, but I love how easy it is to use!

I just bought a dell. Its a 4600c. It has a flat screen and the space saver tower. So far so good.

OK, someone is going to think this is sponsored but I am a Dell owner too! We love our laptop. We ordered it online and it was in our apt in a few days. Of course, their help desk is over seas, but I think they all are now so that shouldn't be a determining factor.

My mom hs a dell, I have a gateway. Before you call them, just make a list of all the things you want to be able to do with your computer.

Like this:
E-mail
Word Processing (which program?)
Gaming (how much? online or now?)
What kind of iternet connection you have (if you use cable or DSL you'll need an ethernet port, if you use dialup, you'll need dialup modem)
WIll you burn CD's or DVD's?
Do you need a DVD player at all (some newer games and programs seem to be comingout on DVD, and a lot of DVD movie features are on DVD rom, so that's a drive I'd recommend)
Do you do any photo editing?
How much hard disk space will you need (Storing photos, mp3's, etc)
Do you have any peripherals, like an iPod, or a webcam that need USB or fireiwre ports.

JUst make a list of everything you want to do with your computer so you're prepared to tell them on the phone? Why? So you don't forget anything important, but also so that they don't sell you anything you don't need.

I spent a forune on my comptuer. I ende dup with a lot of crap (like a fancy shamncy TV card) that I never used, but it was also good because it's 4 years old, and all I needed was more RAM and I can run the latest programs.

DOn't spend more money on softward BS packages. If you're going to spend more money, get more processor speed and more RAM. That's what I think

Re: what kind of computer do you have? need help in ordering one..

it depends on
A. how much you want to spend
B. your intent in using the computer

an avg using can spend about 700 bucks on a dell and still get a flat panel monitor

let me know your intent and price and i will fish you a price...the above post is a great system for price....4600 is a midrange computer ... this give you the chance to expand in the future. 2400/2500 (whatever the low model is, i forget) is a budget saver but still preforms the avg user. There is no AGP slot (grahics port) so you won't be playing the extreme games you say kids playing. that is your main difference.
