What questions do you ask the photographer?

Ask if you can create your own package. If not, ask if you can swap out elements from one package and substitute it for something specific you want (ie - I did not want photo thank yous but thats included for me)

find out about pricing for a la carte items after you've selected your package -- i'm told that is where they get you!

Most important is look at the quality of their work.

Are the pics in focus?

Do they have a consistent style that you like?

Do they frame the subjects in a way that you like?

They can offer the best package in the world, but if they take crappy pictures then that's what you'll get.

I had one friend send me a sample disc of someone and the faces were consistenly out of focus and the cropping of the people in the pics was odd. I am very picky about photography. Good luck!!!
