I have had this really horrible phlegm-y, sound like a heavy smoker, cough all week and I don't have any other traditional 'cold' symptoms. What can I do for it? What is it? Is this a symptom of allergy suffering?

It's not allergies b/c phlegm (if any is present) is usually clear when you are suffering allergies. If the phlegm is yellowish/greenish, then you might have a respiratory infection, which might require an antibiotic.
Until you can see your doctor, just keep drinking LOTS of fluids (water, juice, hot tea, etc.) and maybe take an OTC expectorant (which helps to bring up the phlegm...I know it's a bit unpleasant, but you need to get it OUT of your chest!)
Feel better!

I like Robitussion CF I think, it is the expectorant. and I would go to the DR.

So far, nothing is coming up. It is just a wet cough, so I assume it is phlegm. I have been drinking lots of water. I think I should see a doctor if it doesn't get better this week.
I tried cough medicine last night and it worked a little.
Thanks!

I was blaming allergies for my horrible chain smoker like cough - but since it has been over a week with it - I am headed to the doctor today after work ... I can let you know what I find out. Doe you have any other symptoms - I have been also feeling run down and about 3 weeks ago I had a horrible virus - so I am thinking I never really kicked the first infection...

No other symptoms, that is what is so weird. No runny or stuffed nose, no sore throat, no headache. Nothing that leads me to believe it is a cold.
do you have a humidifier? use that while you sleep to get the plegm out...
if not...you can sit near a boiling pot...
but if the phlegm is a color...or opaque...get it checked out

I would go to the doctor. Allergies dont cause you to bring up phlegm from your chest. However, you could be like me where it starts with a nasal drip and than winds up infecting your chest and now you have bronchitis!
A LOT of people have it - it is going around!! My FH had it for over 2 weeks, just a phlegmy cough, just like you described - that would NOT quit!! He finally went to the Dr. who gave him Zithromax, it took 4 days until he started feeling better. He is (knock on wood) finally completely better now.
If you've had it for more than a week, definitely make an appointment with your Dr. to get rid of it for good!
Feel Better!!

Definitely see a Dr. if it does not go away soon, because if that phlem stays in you chest and doesn't come up it could turn into pneumoinia. It happens to my dad every year. Feel better!!

fluids, fluids, fluids. Stay away from dairy products too. Fluids help loosen it up by keeping your hydrated. Walking around I know helps in heart/surgery patients for preventing pneumonia after surgery.

Re: What to do for a Phlegm-y cough?
That happened to me last year, my first year teaching. I had the cough for a month & no other symptoms, so I didn't go to the dr., then near the end it started hurting my chest when I coughed and was tight. It was mainly just annoying. They took an x-ray & did the little test & I had bronchitis.
I would go & get it checked.....I'm sure it is nothing.
