What to do with my wedding dress?

I would like to keep my wedding dress and do a trash the dress shoot sometime in the spring/summer. After that, I'd like to hold onto to it. Maybe make something out of it for our future kids.

So my question may be a little silly but what should I do with it? Take it to the cleaners (it got dirty on my wedding day) and keep it in the dress bag until I do my TTD shoot? Then to preserve it, I have to get one of those kits? What are all of you ladies doing with your dresses once the wedding is over?

Idk how all this works so any info/advice would be appreciated!

TIA

Jassy if you want to save it I wouldn't do a TTD. It may not be able to be cleaned after.

Well, when I say 'trash' I don't intend to truly trash it lol I just wont have to be as careful as I was on the wedding day. Although since it rained the night before my day, the bottom of my dress is dirty anyways. Plus, I like the idea of an excuse to put my dress on again and take some more once in a life time photos.

I would wait on getting it cleaned/preserved if you are going to do a TTD. I would think you would want to do it after the TTD shoot.

Right, I figured I wouldn't preserve it until after the TTD... But wasn't sure on what to do. So, will the dress be fine in the garment bag until next spring/early summer? I feel so clueless on this haha

I would think it should be fine not preserved for a few months to a year. People order their dresses a year in advance and they come in months before the wedding and they are fine. Maybe a David's Bridal bride can weigh in? I think they make you pick up your dress as soon as it comes in and tell you how to store it for a few months before the wedding. I think they say the leave the zipper open at the top or something??

We grew up together and have countless pictures of us in dresses and we want to do a cute photoshoot with both of us in our wedding dresses!!! This way our dresses wont be trashed BUT we will get to wear them again and take some more pictures. After that Ill prob preserve the dress, but for now its in my garmet bag.

Mine is in the garment bag. Stuff has been so crazy that i haven't had the chance to even think about it. One of the ruffles got torn from people stepping on it on the day. My bridal salon said to bring it back and they will fix it before I send it off to be preserved.

Re: What to do with my wedding dress?

I preserved it myself. I used a damp towel with detergent to spot clean the hem myself. I then bought an archival box from the Container store and wrapped it in the paper supplied. Cost me less than $40 (I got the large size, not the under the bed size).
I did it this way because I got tired of spending money and since we live in an apartment we are limited with space. The dry cleaner by me does it for $125 but the box is huge.

Re: What to do with my wedding dress?

My dress is hanging on my closet door since I don't know what to do with it. I heard that some places actually cut the dress from the waste down and put that on the bottom of the box so you only see the top of the dress at the front. Is that what preserving is? I want to keep my dress as a whole.

P.S. how much did everyone pay to have their dress preserved? I received two quotes, $240 and $140 but I don't know if there are diff methods drycleaners use.

I'm doing something similar with my best friend. Are you hiring an actual photographer? I think we are just going to have my dad take pictures. In the meantime, its hanging up on the closet door in my old bedroom at my parents, taking up half the room.
