i understand you not wanting to name names, however can you tell us what was said so we can maybe better help you evaluate the situation?
if i received something nasty i would talk to the vendor first and attempt to understand what prompted him/her to do this. secondly i would review what my expectations were for the event, and given what has transpired, if my expectations are not met i would state that i will be rather disappointed. the vendor is stupid to write a nasty FM as it gives you more leverage if you want to ever take this person to court. i would put pressure on this vendor to 'make right' and simultaneously look for a back-up if need be.
