No, you definitely don't need to spend $9-10K to get great pictures and video. A lot of vendors will work with you though to stay within your budget. Just do your homework! It'll definitely pay off!

I agree that you don't have to spend that much $$ to get good quality, but you do if you want quantity and upgraded albums as in my situation.
My photographer came very well recommended from my friends, and as far as price was concerned I felt they were in the middle of the other places I priced out. So for what they told me most brides get in the typical package they were in your ballpark. We are paying more than that since we upgraded everything for photo and video.
It depends what you are looking for.

Re: whats is too MUCH
We ended up spending $7,000 on photography and videography (GULP!). The BULK was photography since we're getting Doug from Patken (my brother used him, so my mom wants us to have him).

Here is my take. Something is 'too much' if you have to go into hock to pay for it. If you have to charge something and it takes you years to pay off then it is 'too much'. But if you can afford something out right, it is nobody's business what you spend.

I am paying just under $3500 for both.... and he is great! Much better in my opinion than a lot of the over priced studios out there. Do your research and with anytihng in the wedding business, you will find something that you like AND afford!

Re: whats is too MUCH
I used the same company and am paying 5100 for 2 photographer and a videographer.
I was quoted over $7K by 3 other companies for the smaller packages...
