What's the point in hosting and inviting people to a party if....**UPDATED**
...you aren't going to provide anything? I mean, it's fine if the theme of the party is pot luck, but in this case I think it's retarded!
A friend of ours got married about 4 months ago out of state, had a very small wedding....family only. Now they are back, and want to host a party celebrating their marriage with their friends. So, they decided to do a BBQ. Here's how it was explained:
'We would love to celebrate with you and have decided to host a bbq. Please let us know if you can make it for planning purposes. Basically, we are going to provide a grill outside on the stoop (it is a fun stoop!) with a big bucket drinks. After everyone has eaten their meat we will come up to our place and have little munchies and music and drinks and ??? You would need to bring your own meat products and drinks. We will provide condiments and some beer and maybe hotdogs. Not much more because we spent a lot on our wedding'.
And that's it!!
Is it just me

Looks like a way to solicit gifts, with out having to lay out any cash. IMO

The part that galls me the most is that they say they'll provide ketchup mustard, MAYBE hotdogs and SOME beer!!
Do we have to bring plates and forks too or do we sit on the stoop and eat out of our hands?!

OMG - That is nerve. If they are 'hosting' to celebrate their wedding than they should be 'providing' more than ketchup and mustard.

I understand potluck, but why tell everyone to bring their own meat? Isn't it easier if some people bring a few dishes, and the rest chip in for the meat a bit?
I agree that its way to imformal, but I have never heard of anyone bringing their own meat!!!

Alina, that's what amazed me the most. If you're HOSTING a BBQ, provide the burgers and dogs for crying out loud. Rather than make your guests come there with RAW MEAT.
Or at least the drinks...they are providing nothing!

The way the put it is also really crude - 'Bring your own meat' - it sounds barbaric!!
ETA: Ok one more though - considering they arent providing much - what does 'some' beer mean - are they talking a case - because they way they are putting it people getting invited better bring their drink too....

I love this 'Not much more because we spent a lot on our wedding'. A wedding that you weren't even invited to. Geez. I wouldn't go. What's it going to be like cooking, with twelve different people watching their own meat? I don't know, sounds like a really poor attempt at asking for gifts without really asking.

I've had someone do that to me too. I didn't show.. it's beyond tacky!!! Don't invite people over if you can't provide for them! If you still want to spend time together, plan something out at a restaurant where everyone can pay for themselves. People amaze me!
