What's wrong with kids?

Original post by CappyGirl

I am asking this question because I just never spent much time thinking about it, but lately I've been reading posts about brides who have very strong feelings against having children at their wedding receptions. What is the reason behind it? I don't have many children to worry about, but I am just wondering why some have such strong feelings. Any insight?

09er Crashing.

My feelings are, and again these are MY feelings( because I know people are very quick to attack) I don't think a nightime wedding that ends at 1:00 am is a place for children who should have been in bed many, many hours before than.
I also cannot afford to feed that many people who
probably won't eat anyway. Also, in my experience, and again only my experience, lots of parents tend to not watch their kids and let them run like little manaics all over the place. In my opinion a late night adult affair + alcohol and little kids doesn't mix.

But if you want children at your wedding, invite them. You can do whatever you like, it's your wedding!

I guess I never thought of it because the only 'kids' we are really having are FH's nieces and nephew (our fg's and rb) and my one cousin, who is a doll and will be about 7 y.o. at the time. The rest are FH's first cousins, who aren't really kids, some are in their late teens, the majority in their 20s, so I don't think we could not invite them. I do wish I would have given this more thought though. . .

When I was 12 I went to a wedding at a hotel and me and my cousins rode the elevators up and down...

It's probably people just want it to be 'adults only' atmosphere..without kids running around screaming.

Also, if its a night time wedding people may be afraid that the adults will leave early b/c the kids are tired.

i totally agree with both these. our reception is ending at 1 am... i dont want adults leaving at 10 because their kids need to go to bed. besides, it gives parents a night to themselves without the kids, which is probably a rarity and relief, so i like to think that our wedding is doing them a solid.

my 2 kids are in the wedding, but their mother will be picking them up about an hour into the reception

i can't speak for everyone but i think there are a few reasons people don't want kids at their wedding....

money - even if there are cheaper prices for kids, its still expensive to pay for a plate of chicken fingers or something....In our case if we allow kids there will be about 20 (bc we can't invite some and not others)...that $$$ adds up

also, for evening weddings esp, kids may get tired as it gets later and start getting whiney or misbehaving

very well put!!

Re: What's wrong with kids?

1. i dont want my guests having to 'babysit' their children

2. i dont want my dance floor filled with little kids

3. i don't want to worry about what's being said/done, how much is being drunk, because kids are around

4. i don't think it makes sense to pay $150+ a head for a child who's not even going to like the food that's served anyway

i could probably continue...but thats basically the gist of it...

bridal party kids only

I am having about 10 - 14 kids under 18 at my wedding. I actually love having kids around and sharing memories...its how I grew up and I feel it adds something to pictures and the video.

That being said...some ppl don't really want children to attend so their parents can really let loose and enjoy themselves... kinda get the night off. I am considering hiring a baby sitter for the night to sit with the kids at the kids only table to entertain and tend to them so my sisters can relax a bit.

That is a wonderful idea and I am sure the parents of the children will absolutely appreciate it!

I think alllll of the reasons that people don't invite kids have been put out there. And ultimately, it's the bride and groom's decision. We're having kids because I love them and truly want them there. And we're leaving it up to the parents if they want to bring them or not.

There's NO WAY i can do without kids at my wedding. I have 13 nieces and 2 nephews....I think i'll be having AT LEAST the 15 at my wedding....good thing their meals are half price!!!

I really couldnt imagine them not being there tho. I think having kids at ur wedding makes it more fun...less stiff. You need some younger people out on that dance floor to liven it up!

Re: What's wrong with kids?

some RH's told me kids are full price but will be served pasta with butter & chicken fingers & french fries & they can't eat at the CH. so i told the BM at that RH that she could tell my 2 nieces (who eat everything) they can't have something. there was no way i was paying $130 for that.

the RH i booked charges kids 1/3 the price of other guests & they can eat whatever they want at the CH & have pasta with butter & chicken fingers for dinner.

we are only inviting our 2 nieces & 1 nephew. we feel its important for them to be included in the entire wedding as flower girls & ring bearer because this will make FH officially their uncle. plus FH & i have been dating since before my brother even got married so he has seen these kids since birth.

Re: What's wrong with kids?

We're having just close family kids, plus our BM's two dtrs who are the fg's.

The problem is that there would be no one to come and pick the kids up, and all the family babysitters will be at the wedding. And we have a lot of OOT guests that are the parents of the children...so that makes it tough too

I'm one of those people who has a strong opinion about having kids at your wedding. It's exactly as most of you responded..

1. It's an adult affair. With the exception of your own kids, other children such as your little cousins and children of your friends, it's to me just inappropriate for anyone to get offended if their kids are not invited. I come from a very large family and have about 20 first cousins, we were never invited to weddings when we were little, and our parents understood. Believe me, parents WANT a night off from their children.

2. You know how kids like to stick their fingers in cakes to lick the icing. That's my biggest fear!!! I do not need my wedding cake ruined on my big day.

3. I don't want them controlling the dance floor.

4. And to be honest I didn't even think of the money aspect that someone else mentioned. Even if it is half price for them, I'm already having a hard time cutting down my list of adults. I'm glad my FH and I decided right from the word GO that we would not have children at the wedding.

Sorry if I offended anyone.

I agree completely. FH decided at the beginning no children. Our reception is from 6:30pm to 12:30pm AND we are having a formal sit down dinner (separate room from the dj and dancing) and I don't want the kids running amok during that time. Don't get me wrong - I love kids - but, I would like my wedding to be an adult affair only. I will be making the age cutoff at 18. Of my family (which is HUGE), everyone understands and is actually somewhat happy so they can have the night off and enjoy themselves. Also, FH does not have any children on his side.

All of the reasons everyone, including myself, stated are really true.

BUT

i think the decision ends with how well behaved are the 'kids' your inviting.
