I went to the Halmark Store to look for Christmas cards.. Do you believe that on the whole wall of Christmas cards, not ONE of them said Merry Christmas? It was either 'Seasons Greetings', 'Happy Holidays' or 'Best Wishes for the Holiday Season.'
Whats the deal with calling a Christmas Tree a 'Hoiday Tree'
Im the last person that would start a thread about this, but it kind of bothered me. It seems that people are so wrapped up in the whole idea of the 'Holiday Season' that with all the shopping & the craziness, people are loosing the real meaning of what Christmas is all about, and that to me is truly upsetting.
Does anyone else notice this, or is this just me???

Yea, but thats because we are so used to it. It kind of just rolls of my shoulders by now. This year its not so bad, but when hannukah is a week or two before christmas, and everyone is saying Merry Christmas or asking me if I did my christmas shopping, its a bit annoying, considering my holiday already ended. I don't really mind that much, I just try to get into the spirit of the season, but I don't think that retail workers should be saying merry christmas to everyone. Happy Holidays is definitely more appropriate, because it includes everyone.
I agree, it is more appropriate, but seriously. You cant please everyone. What about the people that dont celebrate anything at all, and someone tells them 'Happy Holidays' ?
Whatever Its a greeting. Its better than not saying anything at all. To call a Christmas tree a holiday tree IMHO is disrespectful to me & my religion. I would never EVER call a Menorah a candlestick because of the symbolism it has to the jewish religion, and I would never disrespect anyone of that faith.
Sorry about the vent. This whole topic really pisses me off.
Yeah, I don't really understand the holiday tree thing either. I was never allowed to have one because its a CHRISTMAS tree, and I don't think my parents would have changed their minds if I decided to call it a holidaay tree.

Oh yeah, I've noticed it and I agree with everything you've said. Funny thing is that my FH noticed the same thing when he was shopping for me and thinks it's all pretty ridiculous...and he's Muslim! It was interesting to hear his perspective on the whole thing..mainly that he's never been offended by Christmas or anything related to it; he enjoys celebrating w/me and my family, buying gifts and putting up the Christmas tree.

I think there's being politically correct and then there's being ridiculous. If there are cards for other religious holidays which specify those holidays in the cards, then there is NO reason cards shouldn't say 'Merry Christmas'. I was raised Catholic and have always said 'Merry Christmas' to my fellow Christians and 'Happy Holidays' to other friends of various religious preferences.

Wait a minute, what is this 'Holiday Tree' business about? I haven't heard that story... Umm, the President addressed the nation last night, spoke about Christmas,a nd then quoted a CHRISTMAS SONG... about God.
There are lawyers suing towns because there are nativity scemnes on town hall property.
Nice life.

Re: Whats wrong with the world today?
oh i know i have noticed that alot within the this past month. what happened to merry christmas....ya know its so true someone said this im not sure who it was but i am going to quote them 'we are so worried about offending others...in the end we are offending ourselves'. its so true. christmas was always the 'holiday' so to speak and now all of a sudden that is going to change because people are throwing up a big stink. if you dont celebrate it thats fine. i have no problem with that. no one is forcing you to say merry christmas. just ignore them if you dont celebrate christmas. its that easy. this is a very heated subject for me because i find it very wrong that people cant say merry christmas now. out of all the stores i have went to and all the christmas shopping that i have done only 4 people have said merry christmas to me. do you know that i told them thank you so much for saying that. thats the way it should be and the employees agreed.

Re: Whats wrong with the world today?
the word holiday actually means 'A religious feast day; a holy day.'
So it can't be all that terrible a thing to say - as far as the religious aspect goes.

i'm someone that doesn't celebrate xmas. i don't get offended if someone say merry christmas or would ask if i finished my xmas shopping. but i would get offend if someone wrong merry xmas in a holiday card if they know i don't celebrate the holiday. i love seeing xmas trees and xmas lights

It boggles my mind when someone says that hearing Merry Christmas is annoying. Someone is taking time out of there day to wish you good will and you find it annoying. Give me a break... When someone says Happy Hannukah to me I don't get annoyed...it is meant to be a 'blessing' of sort and not meant to convert you. here is my suggestion...Lighten up. You should find something way more tragic to annoy you.
(here's your drama Christine.... )
Merry Christmas!! Amy

i totally agree you 100%. A lot of it is because the word Christ is in the word. Give me a break. That is the meaning of this season. Christ who is born. Do we change the words for Hanakuh about there candle. Sorry don't know what it is called.

Re: Whats wrong with the world today?
Omg, FH and I were just talking about the Holiday Tree thing with these towns a few days ago. I say 'Happy Festivus'; the holiday for the rest of us!!!
I totally see what you're saying Janie and agree wholeheartedly. I send Happy Holiday cards to friends of mine who don't celebrate Xmas, but for my family that I celebrate Xmas with I want to say Merry Christmas!!
Lol, I was just thinking how funny it would be if this thread got pulled for using the 'C' word!!

Re: Whats wrong with the world today?
Yes, I agree with this thread that lately it feels like Christmas is being 'silenced'...but how I feel this is the case is when for ex. in Manhasset this year on the news they wanted to call the christmas tree a holiday tree..that is bullsh!t...and like Janie said how the holiday cards seam less Christmasy.....
But for the girls who are sitting here saying that people who don't observe Christmas should not be annoyed when sales people in stores say Merry Christmas is BS....In that case Happy Holidays should be said..this is not a Catholic Society that we live in and we have to respect the religions and observances of others.....
Oh...fyi if you want to start 'Drama' don't do it with a sensitive issue like religion...not cool!
Happy Holidays!!!

The tree is a symbol of Christmas no other holiday. I dont see what it needs to be called a 'holiday tree'.

The real meaning of Christmas was lost a long time ago. I think it was about the time retailers starting putting out Christmas trees, and Christmas decorations before Halloween. I mean, seriously, how could anyone that doesn't celebrate not be offended that Christmas is being rammed down their throat before Halloween and Thanksgiving??? I celebrate Christmas and I find it offensive!!
On this board alone we have many who celebrate Christmas, but I believe we have just as many who celebrate Chanukah, and there is at least one of us that celebrates Yule. (and I'm sure, if everyone posted what they celebrate we would find celebrants of Kwanza, Dia de Los Reyes etc). Each holiday is steeped in tradition and meaning, yet only Christmas has lost its. Seems to me those that celebrate all the other holidays are doing something right.

Re: Whats wrong with the world today?
It's such craziness! What makes me even more sad...someone said it before...how you can not mention God or Christ anymore. It's like they are trying to erase the whole aspect of God everywhere you turn. It's like you have to walk on egg shells just so no one gets 'offended'.
