Whats wrong with the world today?

Original post by SIBride06

I went to the Halmark Store to look for Christmas cards.. Do you believe that on the whole wall of Christmas cards, not ONE of them said Merry Christmas? It was either 'Seasons Greetings', 'Happy Holidays' or 'Best Wishes for the Holiday Season.'

Whats the deal with calling a Christmas Tree a 'Hoiday Tree'

Im the last person that would start a thread about this, but it kind of bothered me. It seems that people are so wrapped up in the whole idea of the 'Holiday Season' that with all the shopping & the craziness, people are loosing the real meaning of what Christmas is all about, and that to me is truly upsetting.

Does anyone else notice this, or is this just me???

OK, I think you are all right and it's silly that we have to be so politically correct.

But I don't think that a nativity scene belongs on government owned property. JMO! It's just a matter of where I would draw the line between church and state. I wouldn't boycott a store that had a nativity scene though.

I saw plenty of 'Merry Christmas' cards at Eckerd. they were the Hallmark cards that are sold in a pack of 12 or 15. and they were gorgeous!

I just wish all the PC BS would stop so people stop pointing at us Jews as one of the reasons *why* people can't have their Christmas trees be called Christmas trees, why people can't buy Christmas cards and why salespeople at the Gap won't say Merry Christmas.

It's bad enough we're a small minority who don't celebrate what's basically a national holiday, now we're the grinch who stole the word Christmas.

Yes, I agree with this thread that lately it feels like Christmas is being 'silenced'...but how I feel this is the case is when for ex. in Manhasset this year on the news they wanted to call the christmas tree a holiday tree..that is bullsh!t...and like Janie said how the holiday cards seam less Christmasy.....

But for the girls who are sitting here saying that people who don't observe Christmas should not be annoyed when sales people in stores say Merry Christmas is BS....In that case Happy Holidays should be said..this is not a Catholic Society that we live in and we have to respect the religions and observances of others.....

Oh...fyi if you want to start 'Drama' don't do it with a sensitive issue like religion...not cool!

Happy Holidays!!!

wow..that is even more lame then the getting annoyed at people saying Merry Christmas!
don't start drama over religion!...Like I said..they are only wishing you good will..no one wants to convert you with the statement. It's like saying God Bless you when someone sneezes..does that offend too? I didn't bash her not being Catholic or for her religious beliefs at all. I just said there are far worse things in this world that people say that would annoy me. At for the record..it isn't only the Catholics that celebrate Christmas.

That's just nuts! I understand asking empolyees at a store to TRY to say 'Happy Holidays' but if you get offended you are hyper-sensative!! I and half Jewish and love to celebrate both...my BM dated a Jewish guy and he rolled his eyes if you said 'merry x-mas' to him!! It's crazy!!

I understand SOME happy holiday cards for those who only want to send out generic cards but some celebrate and want to send out Christmas cards and should be able to buy them in the stores!! It's going to have to get worse before it gets better I'm afraid....tho it's the little battles getting lost that are the most dangerous if you ask me!! People forget what the battle was all about!

As for simply telling a student that Christmas is the celebration of Christ's birth being wrong---what else SHOULD you tell him??? Lie??? If it's the definition then you say it- it's not the same as you trying to preach!! This is going TOO far!

No Sweetie it is not 'lame'.. and I am not saying it keeps me up all night long..i am only saying that if a family is shopping for their holiday and it is not christmas it would be nice for them to hear happy holidays and not just merry christmas...it is nice and thougthful to observe others holidays and not just our own...and no one said there was anything wrong with wishing people good will...

Again I refuse to add to anymore 'drama' regarding religion...you got your attention by starting this....just remember if you start drama, as YOU called it and the topic is religion, don't expect others to not be offended by what you say....reply what you please I am done.

If you heard some of the things my ignorant coworkers have said to me.... Someone said above 'Do we change the words for Hanakuh about there candle.'

Which I *think* translates to 'do we ask them to change the name of their Menorah?'

You know what, nevermind.

i totally agree you 100%. A lot of it is because the word Christ is in the word. Give me a break. That is the meaning of this season. Christ who is born. Do we change the words for Hanakuh about there candle. Sorry don't know what it is called.

It really depends if you call it a 'holiday season' or the 'Christmas Season.' Remember there are celebrations other than Christmas and Chanukah at this time of the year and whereas I particularly am not offended by people celebrating Christmas or sharing it with the community, some people are.

Chanukah is a festival - the Festival of Lights(as opposed to a holiday) that is NOT based in the bible or a holy scripture. The 'menorah' holds candles that represent the miracle of the oil that burned for 8 days giving light when it was really only enough for one day. Comparing Christmas and Chanukah, to a Jew, is like comparing apples and oranges. There are MANY holidays that are based in the bible which carry MUCH more significance than the Chanukah celebration. Those are the days when alternate side of the street parking rules are suspended in NYC.

Chanukah has been commercialized within the Jewish community as much as Christmas has and thus people treat them equally - especially in NY where the population of Jewish people exceeds that of the Jewish population of the State of Israel. The total population of Jews in the world is less than 1/3 of 1%. You dont see it in NY but I assure you those are the cold hard facts.

As I have said before on a couple of threads. It is ok to celebrate holidays and share in other cultures. I stay true to myself maintaining my Jewish identity despite the overwhelming presence of Christmas. It isnt easy but I do it as I call a Christmas tree a Christmas tree and a menorah a menorah.

Thanks for your posts in my defense, stephanie.
I was not on last night, as I was at my company's HOLIDAY party, LOL.
As for creating drama, wow, I didn't say anything that I thought would create any drama, I was just stating my own personal feelings, and for someone to say I am lame for my feelings really isn't nice. Maybe if you were in the same situation, you would feel differently. Maybe you wouldn't, I don't really know. But don't come here and say mean things.
Tell me why you think that it is more appropriate for sales associates in the store to say Merry Christmas over Happy Holidays. Who is is hurting to wish everyone a happy holiday. You don't know the beliefs of the person standing in front of you.
I really hate to get involved with drama, but when someone attacks my feelings, it really gets me angry.

Re: Whats wrong with the world today?

Listen... I think this post is going in the wrong direction. No one is offending anyone. Read my original post and you will see what I am trying to say. Why is it that everyone is so hyper sensitive??? No one is putting ANYONE's religion down. I just simply asked why there is a big issue of renaming a 'Christmas Tree' a 'Holiday Tree'

I cant speak for bitter people in this world. I just simply asked a question-this was not a thread to start drama. I just feel like the whole idea of Christmas & the whole reasoning behind this holy day is diminishing because of people who insist on being Politically Correct. Call it what you want... A Christmas Tree is a Christmas Tree.NOT a holiday tree.

As for those who you think Im offending.. Im sorry you feel that way.

Re: Whats wrong with the world today?

SIBRIDE06 I couldn't agree with you more.

I cannot tell you how ridiculous it is for those who do not celebrate Christmas to try to take it away from those of us who do. Christmas is the holiest of days, it was the birth or our Lord (for those who are Christian). And how dare anyone tell me that I should not say Merry Christmas, I don't celebrate Hanukah, or Kwanza or anything else, so I will say Merry Christmas, and I will call it a CHRISTMAS TREE.

Its like everyone wan to claim the Christmas tree as a symbol of their holiday and its not, it’s a symbol of Christmas. Hey I don't ask people who celebrate Hanukah to call the Menorah (sp?) a Candelabra. So don’t ask me to call the Christmas tree a holiday tree.
