When did everyone start looking for their dresses? We'll be getting married in October 2008 and was wondering if I could wait until next summer before starting to look (so about a year before the wedding)?

you can start as early as you like. I started in Feb 06 for my Nov 06 wedding, which is late by some standards. Some of the girls here started 2 years before - but reconsider since new styles come out twice a year. Just be mindful of the type and designer of the the dress... some take longer thn others.

i got engaged 12/05 and i paid down on my dress in March, got it in April!!!! WHen you find the gown that is for you, don't wait get it!!! There is really no specific time to buy your dress. But if you get it early, off cours you dont do the alterations until the year of your wedding!!

as soon as we got engaged - 13 months before trhe wedding - it took 8 months for my dress to come in....

I got engaged Dec. '04, bought my dress at the end of Jan. '05. I was too excited to wait!!!

I got engaged in May 05 and bought the dress in Sept 05- I started looking right away I was so excited- it just took me a lot of shopping to find 'the one'...you know, sort of how it took me a long time to find 'the one' with FH!!!

I got engaged in May 05 and started to shop the next month...found the dress ordered it and it came in early April!

I got engaged in August '05 and ordered the dress in November '05 (13 months before the wedding).

engaged Mar. 05...didn't start dress shopping till May 06. just ordered the dress for my feb 07 wedding, at the 8 1/2 mo. mark. honestly, i got lucky....i probably should've started looking sooner!
I started about 10-11 months before just in case I fell in love with a gown that would take longer to come in.

OK, I'm very bad! Didn't start shopping for a Dress until June and the Wedding is in December 2006. The Dress should be in, in October! I hope you have as much luck as I did.....It Happened to be the first one my sister pulled out of the rack and the first one I tried on! Have fun and Enjoy your shopping!

i started looking online right after we got engaged but i didn't start going to the stores until about 6 months after. we were engaged in spet 2004 and wedding is in 4 days so there was plenty of time

I ordered my dress in Oct 05 and it didnt come in until May of this year. Start looking and trying on dresses now, but I would hold off on ordering because what you want could change.

thanks for all the advice. i may try looking this summer jic i find something i love. i don't wanna cut it too close next summer should i not be able to find something i love and then i would have less time to look.
reason i'm just considering looking only in the summers is b/c i'm in grad school and i have no time / life between mid august and mid may.

Got engaged in September, found my dress in October, a year before my wedding date! And it's finally in! I would definitely go when you have time to! It's never too early to start looking and narrowing down what you like! Good luck!
