When DIY goes wrong...

Would you please share bad DIY experiences?

These will help me feel better about my somewhat botched STD magnets...and perhaps help others learn from our mistakes.

(Note to DIY folks making magnets: make sure your magnet paper is straight when it's in the printeror hope that some refridgerators are not on 90 degree angles...)

Re: When DIY goes wrong...

I was working on the 'I do' letters for the cake table. Being the diva that I am, I wanted it to sparkle. So I slathered each letter with glue and dunked them in white glitter. They came out perfect.......or so I thought. An hour later the glue dried clear, not white, so it just looked like a mismatched wood letters with some glitter on it. Yikes!!!!

PS - since my boss is away, I've been secretly painting my letters this afternoon. Everyone keeps passing by, saying 'do you smell paint?' I just finished the last coat of paint!

Re: When DIY goes wrong...

Diva-
Sorry, but I was chuckling while I read your post!

I am planning on doing a lot of DIY stuff. Have not done any yet, wait, yes I have and had a minor blunder. I printed the invites for my E-Party (which PS is not until April), I also printed the envelopes and got so gung ho (b/c they turned out better than I expected) I put them in the envelopes and sealed them BEFORE putting the direction cards in them NOW I have to buy more envelopes and re-do them.

I was going to attempt to do the STD Magnets too, thanks for the 'angle' advice!

Re: When DIY goes wrong...

I would recommend buying the 8 1/2 x 11 magnet sheets so its easier to print. I got 5 sheets for $9.99. Since I had a custom design, I was able to fit about 5 on a sheet. If your looking for business cards, you can fit about 8-10 on one sheet.

We designed them ourselves, too and printed them on the 8.5 x 11 sheets. Because they came out slightly crooked, we're having trouble cutting them. FH cut them on a big papercutter at work, but totally botched it. The cuts are straight, but the images are off center. My favorites are the ones that show part of the std next to it, too.

Re: When DIY goes wrong...

My friend, a part-time wedding planner, is trying to convince me not to do my own invites. All of the brides she has worked with said it was so time consuming that in the end they don't feel like they saved any money. She is trying to convince me not to obsess on this as she says the only ones who remember the invite are usually the mom's, the bride and maybe a few others. I'm still on the fence with this one.

i agree with this and wound up doing my own anyway. the time it took was crazy but in the end well worth the bonding time with my mother. at one point i priced what it would cost to have them printed (i created the design) because i was so fed up, and they wanted $600 just for the invite and reception card alone! i saved $$ on both design and cost however did underestimate exactly how much i was going to save.

also, using my own printer i was limited to the stock i could use which really annoyed me. a few trials worked, but when i started to mass produce the printer jammed repeatedly

overall, all the printed items were linked together and they both personalized and enhanced our 'theme', it was hard work but well worth it!
