I hadn't ever had sushi until I went to Japan, and wherever we went, they seemed to put it on the rice, under the sashimi (meaning for nigiri, I'm not huge into rolls). So that's how I do it...but I feel like I get odd looks when I have it for lunch around here.

I put the wasabi directly on my sushi piece. DH mixes it in the soy sauce.

I dont eat it, but I went out to eat with my cousin and her FIL who is about 80 something. he thought it was pistachio pudding and put a huge spoonful in his mouth. I was surprised he didnt have a heart attack. I hear its really hot and spicy?

oh dear...my great-grandmother did that with jalapenos at a restaurant one day...she thought it was an olive slice. they were also out of milk that day and so she had to drink coffee creamers!!!

what you are doing is the correct way- the way they do it in japan (which is where you learned it).
to mix it with soy sauce is an american thing, and may just as well be a UK thing as well.
personally i like it mixed with soy sauce when i eat rolls, but when i rarely eat the other things (forget the name) i put it right on top of the fish.
