When should we register? and engagement party do/ don't?

I don't don't where to start but I know we should do that soon! I know people want to get us engagement presents.
Secretly, im going to stock up on all those little gifts so I can return them to score a Kitchen Aide standing mixer and a Dyson Ball!

My FH wants an engagement party really bad but I feel guilty asking people for extra gifts. I know not everybody has one. Who had one? who didn't? and why not if you didn't?

I didn't have an eparty, wanted to have one, had it pretty much planned-but had some issues with the FILS, so I stopped planning it and completely called it off.

I would recommend registering for some basic items that you would want and besides that most people will probably give you cash

and definitely go for the kitchenaid stand mixer-i couldn't wait to get married to get mine (plus i got an awesome discount on one) and i absolutely love it, i got it 3 years ago and love it!!!!!

We are having an engagement party, but not making it a huge thing. It is going to be a very informal brunch, and we're keeping the budget as low as humanly possible.

If you are having an engagement party, i would wait to register until right before the e-party invites go out. This way, people dont get you a present when you get engaged and for the engagement party.

If you arent having an engagement party, register as soon as possible.

HTH! Good luck!

we had one, his parents kept asking when it was going to be, so we held one in January. We werent going to register, but people kept asking about it, so we wound up at Bed Bath and Beyond and Macys.

we're having one in september, but its going to be small, only about 60 people. we registered for a few things, about 12, and only told people we were registered if they asked.

We are having an e-party of about 200 people and do not plan on registering. Most people in my family and FH's family give money anyway.

We're not having an engagement party, but I'm going to be registering in the next few months. People have been asking us where we're registered so they could give us a gift.

I am having an engagement party in March. I don't plan on registering until after the engagement party mainly because most of my family will give cash gifts which i would prefer!

I had one and did not register. We just wanted a party to celebrate and did not want anyone to feel obligated to bring gifts. Plus, if anyone did we would just prefer cash, btu of course we cannot say that. Everyone did bring a gift. Mostly, we received money but we did get some bowls, martini sets, books, albums, etc.

We got engaged in July 2007, had our e-party in December 2007, and are getting married in November 2009. Everythins is spaced out enough that I didn't think people would mind. We got lots of cash and gifts off our registry.

we just had ours a few weeks ago and did not register. we got mostly cash and gift cards. people were asking my mom and FMIL if we were registered.. so maybe it would have been a good idea, they just asked which lenox pattern we liked so we got 4 sets of china, vases, picture frames.. things like that.

we chose not to register because we dont live together and we would have to store all the gifts for two years before we could use them.

if youre on the fence about it i would say register for a few things and if people ask tell them, i wouldnt include a registry thing in the invite though- engagement parties are kind of a new trend and not everyone knows to bring a gift.

Re: When should we register? and engagement party do/ don't?

We decided against one. My parents offered to have one for us, but I don't have a wedding party and I know my mother will probably be footing the bill for the Bridal Shower on her own so I didn't want to have her pay for 2 parties.

We've been asked where we are registered, but we tell people no need for gifts right now, it can wait until the bridal shower. We'll probably register a 6 months to a year before the wedding just to knock it out and that way we can concentrate on other things.

We did have an engagement party in July and chose not to register. I really have no idea what items to even register for yet. I feel like it may be too soon, atleast for us. Also, we do not live together and I have no idea where we will be living, so I don't know how much space we are working with. Ideally, I would love to buy a house, but I think as a starter we may end up with a Condo, so that limits what we can register for.

I just got engaged in June and we are trying to decide whether to have an e-party because my family wants one and my future in-laws said that they never heard of such a thing! So nothing is set yet! But, I say register! My FH and I did that yesterday and it was soooooo much fun! That way its done and if someone wants to get you something you will get stuff you like and want! Plus, I had so much fun picking out stuff!

we did not have an e-party. we didn't want one & our parents were happy about that. its an added expense for everyone to have to deal with. plus i am still in school & have too many other things going on right now.

we are not going to register until my sister starts nagging us about it. she will know when the shower will be so she will let FH know when we should register.

who ever wanted to send an engagement gift did.

Re: When should we register? and engagement party do/ don't?

my aunt insisted on an engagement party, but unless she was paying for it, we decided against spending the extra money. We did call all the important people to tell them we were engaged and we rec'ed about 4 cards in the mail.

We decided not to register just yet. I know many brides who registered early and this is what I learned so far:

if you are going to to it early (more than a year before your wedding) keep looking at the registry because as time goes on the items become unavailable in certain stores (mostly the ones that rotate styles and items such as Targets) and style come and go. Sometimes if the item is still available your guest has no choice but to order online and some people do not feel comfortable doing so and that also isn't ideal for the last minute buyers. Also, By the time your wedding comes, those stylish bathroom towels may not be so stylish anymore.

this is good advice. also, if your end goal is to return, i def recommend BBB. i think they're the most liberal with their policy.

we registered for the e-party bc people asked us to. i'd say we got 1/2 gifts and 1/2 money. GL!
