1. Gift off registry 2. Cash/Check enough to cover plate 3. Similar cash gift regardless of venue 4. Cash + Registry Gift
I usually give enough to cover my plate and then a little extra for a gift.
I think I didn't do this right in the past because one of my best friends got married at a cheaper venue and now I feel I didn't 'give' enough. I was a poor grad student then though.
Now I am making better money and want to give her a better wedding gift but her wedding was 1.5 yrs ago. It's too late to try to give a better wedding gift now, right?

Re: When you attend a wedding as a guest....
I am sure there are many different opinions on this, but I would choose
3. Similar cash gift regardless of venue
If the couple gets married at a very expensive hall, I wouldn't necessarily give a bigger gift, because I just can't afford to do so. I think anywhere around $300 is fair/per couple.

yeah its a bit late, i wouldn't worry about it. I am sure she knew you were a grad student and understood.
Maybe a nice gift for their house or something like that. Or make it up to her for her next birthday

Money, most of the weddings that we have been to recently the couples did not register because they were already living together.

I would also go with #3. I think around $300 per couple is standard.

I give a monetary gift, whatever I can afford and think is appropriate. The amount is based on my relationship with the person, not on the venue.

Re: When you attend a wedding as a guest....
I give a cash gift, about $350 to $400. I don't take into consideration the venue, just how close I am to the couple.

Re: When you attend a wedding as a guest....
Wow....this is great information. To me $300/ couple seems alot, but I have been in grad school during my past couple of weddings so of course that sounds like alot.
Funny though...many of our recent weddings have been in MD and asked around there what was the typical cash gift ettiguette...I was told $50/pp. WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! I thought that was low, but goes to show the difference in geological areas.

You can alsways give her something that wasn't purchased off her registery.
I usally give cash. Enough to cover the plate and a little extra.
And I give a gift from the registery at the shower

Re: When you attend a wedding as a guest....
For me it depends on the relationship of the person and what I can afford. $300 sounds high to me, but I did give that to my brother, but less to non relatives. I think you should give what you can realistically afford. There is definetely not a one size gift that fits all.

Re: When you attend a wedding as a guest....
I usually give cash regardless of the venue. I base it on my relationship with the person and how much I can afford.
Knowing you were a grad student, I'm sure they understand. I know when my cousin got married, I wasn't able to give her as much as I would've wanted but her and her husband came up to me and thanked me and said that it wasn't necessary since I didn't really have the money. You can always give them a nice anniversary gift since it's been 1 1/2 years.

Re: When you attend a wedding as a guest....
FH and I always give $300 as a gift and if it's someone closer to us or either one of us are in the wedding party then we give more.
I think you shouldn't worry about what you gave to your friend, like other posters said - make it up to her at her anniversary or bday.

Cash. It's what I would want. But it should be what you can afford to give.

We def give money to cover the cost of the plate at the wedding. At the bridal shower we give gifts off the registry.

YES 300 is a good amount for a couple...If we do go somewhere we know is more expensive or we're close to them then $400
