When you attend a wedding as a guest....

Original post by Bridex100

What do you usually give as a wedding gift?

1. Gift off registry
2. Cash/Check enough to cover plate
3. Similar cash gift regardless of venue
4. Cash + Registry Gift

I usually give enough to cover my plate and then a little extra for a gift.

I think I didn't do this right in the past because one of my best friends got married at a cheaper venue and now I feel I didn't 'give' enough. I was a poor grad student then though.

Now I am making better money and want to give her a better wedding gift but her wedding was 1.5 yrs ago. It's too late to try to give a better wedding gift now, right?

I should also add that the gift I give will never have anything to do with the venue or how expensive the wedding was. It's based on what I can afford and my relationship with the couple.

We send a gift off the registry as a congrats on the engagement, then we give off the registry for the Shower & cash for the wedding, the amount depends on our relationship with the couple.

With speaking with other folks. New York's wedding usually are the most expensive. You should at least give $150 I think by urself n $300 if u and FH...

But since it's so late...maybe Just a nice gift from the registry would be suffice. That is what I did because I was attending wedding when I was str8 out of undergrad n had nothing 2 give. Now I'm in grad school n still have nothing 2 give..

we give cash/check.

we give what we think is a good amount.

Now that we are married, we will most likely give what we received from our guests.

1. Gift off registry - I usually buy multiple gifts off the registry that equals the amount I would give in cash

I would also go with #3. I think around $300 per couple is standard.

i would give more if i was in the BP, otherwise i would give 300

That is why I feel bad. She is one of my best friends and I gave her less than what I would give to someone I don't know very well bc her venue was a cheaper venue.

I think that was the wrong approach.

I just went on her old wedding registry. There are still some open items.

Should I buy her something off her registry and tell her it's an additiional wedding gift? Or just let it be.

For the past couple of years we've been giving $400, but the only weddings we've been to were close friends. We do not base the amount on venue though. I'm sure some of the weddings we've been to our gift has more than covered our plates, to some we might not have.

We would give more to a family member but ours is the only wedding thats happened on either side in a long time. If one of our brothers was getting married we would give 500.

I definitely give NO less than $300 from my FH and myself.

If you think about it.. you know how much everything is costing you.. I ALWAYS give the cost of our plates plus more..

If the venue is more expensive.. or I am very close to the people I give more.

before being involved in my own wedding I usually did a gift off the registry, but now I just do a cash gift, but regardless of venue. I wouldn't want to give someone less of a gift because they were getting married in a less expensive town or would i feel like because someone is throwing a crazy expensive wedding that they deserve more of a gift.

Just let it be. Friends are totally understanding of the being in grad school thing. DH and i have gone through this over the past few years because we had friends get married while we were still in college and it just isn't realistic to give a similar gift as you would when you are out of school. Giving a gift now i think would be really awkward and totally unnecessary. If she is such a good friend there will be ways for you to make it up (which there really is no need to) over the years, house warming, baby showers, etc...

I usually give them min $100 pp. Depending on whos weddingI i increase the amount

I firmly agree with this. If it is a very close friend or if I am in their wedding party, I give more.

I know I personally cannot afford to give $300 or more for every wedding I attend. I feel that if you want the elaborate and expensive wedding that is your decision and a guest should not feel the need to cover their plate b/c the bride & groom wanted such an expensive and elaborate wedding. I am sorry if this sounds harsh.

For example, I am attending my cousins wedding on Friday night and I am giving what I can afford as my grandmother who has nothing is doing the same.

I hope I did not offend anyone but I am just speaking how I feel.

And I always give a check/cash for a wedding. I would only get them something off their registry if I was not attending.

I give money- enough to cover my plate plus some

I usually give cash or a check. Once I gave something off the registry just because it was something that I thought she needed to have, and knew she wouldn't go out and get it herself.

I give a monetary gift, whatever I can afford and think is appropriate. The amount is based on my relationship with the person, not on the venue.

Same here. Close friends and family get more. Acquaintances get less.
