When you go to other people's weddings do you tend to ...

Original post by nrvbrd

always criticize somethinng?

I try not to, but in the last year I have been to some doozies:

1. Went to one in the basement of a church that served their drinks out of an orange cooler

2. Went to a wedding where there were 275 ppl and no seating cards- also cake was their favor (a small piece mind you) and they gave out one per family-***????

3. Went to a wedding on a cruise ship and the bride and groom did not want to pay for a reception so instead they provided us with cake and a champagne toast. I felt that was cheap.

FH says that I criticize ppl's weddings too much and it is going to come back to haunt me.

I think these are major things. I may not be having the best wedding in town, but I am going to do my best!!!!11

I never paid too much attention to the details until I started planning our wedding. And then it was more of things to watch out for.

For example, my cousin had a somewhat informal wedding without assigned seats. I guess they figured the guests would leave the small table down front for them. Nope! hahaha

But I always noticed if the service or music was good or bad. Those are the elements that would most affect me as a guest. I didn't even pay attention to the food.

I sometimes make mental notes to myself but never gossip about it with others at the wedding. I may share my thoughts with my husband later when we get home.

Since I've started planning my wedding, I've paid more attention to the details of each wedding... right before we booked our hall, I asked a friend of mine who had been to a wedding there recently to tell me each and every little thing that was wrong with the wedding...not to nitpick the other couple, but because its important to know for myself! I try not to pass judgment about what I see at weddings but I definitely pay more attention to what I like/don't like.

I am VERY picky...

I will examine EVERYTHING! The linens, the floors, the silverware, I'll pick at the food and examine it before I take a bite, I'll even study the smell of the place, if it smells old and musty, I'm turned off... usually I don't find anything major at weddings... other than I just don't like something....

Oh don't even get me started on the service or the entertainment... I think for me, if the entertainment $*cks, the wedding does too! I know, I'm evil!

I noticed A LOT before, but now that I am planning my own wedding I notice EVERYTHING!!!!!! I think its ok to not like everything that everyone does, I just make mental notes to myself and try not to dicuss my thoughts out loud.

I was definitely glad to see this post. We just got back from a wedding we attended on Saturday. Both FH and I have been friends with the groom for many years. He met this girl from Iowa about a year and a half ago and decided to marry her quicker than we expected. FH and I spent over $500 on airfare, over $200 on rental car, around $200 for hotel, and then food, gas, gift, etc. We were surprised at the reception when there were no placecards directing anyone to a seat, nothing to drink, but an old glass milk bottle with water for a table of 10 to share (no refills), our choice of turkey or pork tenderloin with cheesey mashed potatoes and vegetable medley served buffet style, and no music/no dancing.

The entire affair was over by 8:30pm. We spent the remainder of the evening in our room watching television. There was absolutely nothing to do in the middle of nowhere Iowa.

I just couldn't believe how thoughtless they were of the people who traveled to spend the day with them. I plan to enjoy my wedding day, but I also want to be sure my guests are happy as well.

Re: When you go to other people's weddings do you tend to ...

The only time I've really noticed things was when it's to the point of insulting. For instance, my FH and I attended his frat brother's wedding in Buffalo last year. I understand that weddings outside NY are not quite the affairs they are here, but still, you expect something nice. I was appalled. When we got to the reception, it was the end of the cocktail hour and the bar completely shut down until after dinner. I couldn't even get a glass of water, and there was only one caraf of white zinfandel on the table for 10 people. The food was inedible, and the band was horrific. Also, for the champagne toast, only the head table had champagne. That was it. These were things I noticed only because they were insulting. I understand trying to save money in areas, but not to the point of insulting your guests.

Red, Atlas, Jenny, THANK YOU for your posts.

These are the responses I was looking for.

I will be the first to say, I will not be having a knock em dead fancy wedding. I am doing what I can afford, however I feel as if people do not take their guests feelings into consideration. thougtless is the perfect word.

I spent hundreds of dollars to see someone get married on a cruise and they were too cheap to throw a reception- unacceptable!!!

Yes I do!!! DH says I too criticize, judge and make too many comments. He says that every couple is different--budget restraints, personalities, scheduling of ceremony and reception varies, etc.. thus, not every couple will almost always make the best for their guests. He says to stop and that it's too much. We're biased thus, of course we love our own wedding the best than other couples. Here's my list of criticisms from 3 weddings from 2000-2002 of various cities:

* Too much time gap between ceremony and reception. Ceremony ended at 12 noon and reception began at 6pm. Food started serving at 8pm (typical Chinese wedding banquet and there was no food for a cocktail hour). The couple entertained the guests especially the OTT with an afternoon brunch at a nearby restaurant with the ceremony site. What if you're OTT with no car, and/or don't speak the language?
* Floral centerpieces for reception were too small and did not had a variety of colors
* Favors were not useful to guests (personalized CD with pictures of their courtship together, it was also their seating cards printed on the CD case). Mind you not every guest has access to a computer.
* Reception served the food too slow for during dinner, and towards the end of the night dumped all the the courses at once including dessert (this was a Chinese wedding banquet). We starved from 6pm until 8pm and towards 10:30pm the wait staff rushed the rest of the dishes and put out dessert at the same time.
* Waiter stunk the table with his sweat, did not use deodorant
* Wait staff cannot speak any English
* Wait staff took too long to attend the guests's request. I'd asked for a glass of water which took 45 minutes to get, thus the wait staff to guests ratio was unbalanced.
* DJ was constantly advertising his business rather than doing his job as the DJ. 'My name is XXX from XYZ DJ, phone number is XXXXX.' It's a wedding, not free advertising.'
* No seating cards (guess they had to cut expenses somewhere)
* Sister of the groom wore sneakers and she was in the wedding party!????
* No ceremony, reception only invitation thus no programs. Guests can't tell who was in the wedding party as there were no programs but there was a wedding party introduction. All announcements were in Chinese only, can you make it bi-lingual for those non-Chinese speaking guests?
* Couple didn't meet and greet each table
* Couple didn't get guests involved or to participate on the dance floor. Thus, very few guests of all ages were dancing and many were sitting… led to a very boring reception.
