I made appointments with sales reps and did a walk through of the hotel, saw the amenities, restaurant, bar, and guest rooms.

Also remember to see what else they can include like a breakfast or shuttle service.

yea we did it over the phone - bad idea because we figured how long of a drive it was after teh fact. Now we switched places and the new place claimed I have the blocks but I still haven't gotten a confirm. I am about to go there in person and kill someone.

Yes ask for what is included with the blocked rooms. Also have a number of rooms you think you need. The min is typically 10 rooms.

we just showed up. most hotels were able to show us around, etc. we ended up choosing the wingate. it's good because you can see how far it is, or how long it takes to get there exactly.

I loved the Hilton Garden inn but there is no bar there I also loved the hotel in Plainview. ugh I forgot the name. it's right off the lie. it's just to far though for us. it was so cute though. I plan on dragging fh there for an anniversary, or a weekend. the bar/lounge was perfect, they even had a pool, the rooms were gorgeous. I didn't want my family having to sit in traffic though around 4-5 pm on a friday. plus the 20 min drive.

also we wanted an after party (that's why we wanted a bar in the hotel) I don't want to sound like an alcoholic

Thanks for starting this post! All the responses so far have bee helpful. But one more question.
FH and I were thinking about doing this next... How far in advance do you need to book the blocks? My wedding isn't until next Oct.

They release the rates a year ahead. Start looking soon. My date was sold out of some hotels.

Thanks for the heads up! Now I just need to find a place close to the RH that doesn't cost an arm and a leg and is still really nice....

This is what we did. Make sure to ask a lot of questions - do they charge to distribute OOT bags, do they offer a shuttle or continental breakfast, do you get a free room for your wedding night if you book enough rooms, etc.
