get a hood embroidered? I live in the Bronx, and work in Manhattan. I'm wondering if a local mall can do this or do I have to bring it to a professional cleaner?

I would try to find a tailor in Manhattan, but a lot of the dry cleaners have excellent tailors on site. I once took some suit jackets to a dry cleaner to be altered and the seamstress did a fantastic job.
I think you should do some research. Check out a few places, tell them what you want, and see if they can do it, or better yet, if they have had experience doing that sort of work.

There are a few embroiderly places in both the Bronx and Manhattan. Look them up via yellowpages.com through your zip code.
If you dn't have any luck - there's a place by my house, and I can drop it off for ya.
It costs about $12-$20 depending on what/where.

I think there is a little kiosk in the Manhattan Mall where they embroider hats...maybe they could do it?
