Did most people start with a specific designer and some magazine clippings? Do you just go into a salon with an open mind?

Re: Where did everyone go for their dress?
I went in with an open mind. I did not bring in anything from magazines or ask for a particular designer. I did think that I wanted something simple and not strapless. When I went to Bridal Reflections, this is exactly what they showed me. I really didn't like anything very much. I went to paradise bridal, and they started off by showing me those kinds of dresses, and then suggested I try on some other styles. I am so glad i did. The dress is strapless and has a lot of detail. Go figure.

Re: Where did everyone go for their dress?
I went to a few different places. The first one, Macys (where i went back to buy my dress)
I was completely openminded. I was not sure what I wanted. But as I tried all the dresses it became obvious what style I liked.
As I went to other salons I became more and more picky

Re: Where did everyone go for their dress?
I went in to RK with an idea and a picture of a dress I really liked and a price range I wanted to stay in. The associate found me dresses similar to the style I wanted as well as the dress in the picture. I actually ended up with the dress in the picture (I wasn't expecting to but, it was very classy and flattering and way below my upper price limit).

Re: Where did everyone go for their dress?
I've been to David's, My Daughter's Wedding, RK, Lilette's and the bridal building (like 4 or 5 stores there). I think that's all. Haven't actually picked a dress though!

Re: Where did everyone go for their dress?
After browing through a million magazines, I realized all the dresses I liked were satin and lace, and the ones I really liked the best were by Amsale. So I went to an Amsale trunk show at Kleinfeld, and bought one!
Good luck!

Re: Where did everyone go for their dress?
a few in other states and Wedding salon in Manhasset. I wound up getting my dress there.
I first went in with clippings of dresses I thought i would like and an open mind. I tried on everything they thought would look good on me. Even if I thought it was horrible on the hanger. I didn't turn anything away.
Stuff I thought I would love I wound up not loving. And I was right about not loving the stuff I didn't think I'd like.
I sort of had imagined what I wanted anyway and always leaned towards those styles.
Once you sense your style then see if it looks good on you, it will all fit into place.
good luck and have fun!

Re: Where did everyone go for their dress?
I looked through a bunch of mags... then brought some pics to some stores... then ended up trying on a ballroom gown and loved it... so really, just go and try em on... you'll figure out shortly which style you like.

Re: Where did everyone go for their dress?
I looked online and in mags and found dresses I liked. When I went to the bridal salon I tried on everything and found what I saw in mags and online wasn't what I fell in love with.

Re: Where did everyone go for their dress?
I looked online and at magazines, and had a lot of pics of styles I liked. I went to the salon, and that went out the window! Those styles weren't flattering on me, and the most flattering thing was strapless, which I thought I would hate since I'm busty. But I ended up getting a strapless with detachable beaded spaghetti straps. So definitely keep an open mind, because what you like on the models may not be flattering on you, depending on your body type.
ETA: Gerri at Lilette's was great to work with! She helped me to find all the flattering styles.

Re: Where did everyone go for their dress?
At first I didn't think I would like certain dresses on me. After my friends bugged me to try on some dresses I would have never picked for myself, I actually liked them and ended up picking a dress I would have never considered.

Re: Where did everyone go for their dress?
I had a ton of photos, then one by one they all fell by the wayside. My mom made me try on every dress she saw. One dress that my MOH and I thought looked awful on the hanger and I didn't even want to try on was one of the final 2! I had a very hard time deciding. It was between that one and an all lace dress, never would have imagined either one.
Keep an open mind and try on everything!
