specifically what kind? think long and hard before you make this move. I know everybody says this...but I just got a new puppy and he is SO much work. I seroiusly feel like I have a newborn child. You have to be willing to give up a part of your life for a dog.
good luck!

Re: Where do I get a puppy?
There are so many factors that come into play. I'd do research first on what type of dog would be most compatible with you/fh & your lifestyle (if you are home/out most of the time, the space he will have, how active he will be, etc.)
I lucked out when I got my Dakota from the humane society in Michigan. She ended up being a pure breed Belgian Shepherd and has the sweetest disposition/ however, like johnsae said it requires a lot of work, time and discipline to train your puppy. The first year is truly tough.
You can research breeders online or go to North Shore. Don't buy a puppy from a store though.
I got my childhood dog from the North Shore Animal League in Port Washington. The dogs are free but, they do require references. My family always supported this organization.

Re: Where do I get a puppy?
Just wanted to say animals are not free at NSAL. Their fees vary based on type (dog or cat) and age (puppy/kitten vs older animal).
Nor are they free at town shelters, although if you are a town of hempstead resident, I just got a mailer that they are waiving the fees now in order to get the animals into good homes.

Re: Where do I get a puppy?
Thanks for the input everyone!
I have a small bit of experience with puppies--right before I got married we gave my mom a puppy...So I was able to share in those first few months of the puppy adjusting. But we got her from a family member.

Re: Where do I get a puppy?
I'd HIGHLY recommend getting it from a breeder. We wound up getting our English Bulldog puupy from Canine Corral because they sadi they bred them, but we had nothing but problems from the very beginning.

Re: Where do I get a puppy?
we just recently got a puppy at north shore animal league- go on a sat morning, they have all kinds of puppies but try to get there early (they open at 10!).....if oyu don't see one you like, or if you prefer another sex, you can ask them and they will check the back...we love our louie, and are so glad we adopted him rather than buying him...
adoption is farily easy - they just ask for 2 names and numbers and call the people, so bring the # of a vet and 2 people who will be home!
eta: i think louie 'cost' us $135...I added in extra donation money too so they could recue other dogs, so i thinkj we gave them $175!

Re: Where do I get a puppy?
Whatever you do DO NOT get a puppy from a pet store. My brother got a puppy from a pet store in Bellmore on Sunrise Highway and a week later the puppy died.

We didn't pay for our dog when we got her there. Thye probably go on donation now. We got her 30 years ago when I started kindergarten.

Re: Where do I get a puppy?
Definitely DO NOT BUY A PUPPY FROM A PET STORE!!!! You will have nothing but heartache. Too many friends of mine did just that and had nothing but sick animals. Some even died! (look up any of them on the BBB or http://www.ripoffreport.com, to see what I mean) I would recommend looking into the North Shore Animal League, I got my first dog when I was little from there and she was with me for 10 great years! If you want a pure bred pup akc pup, go to akc.org and find a breeder in your area. I went there for my new puppy and found a great local breeder, and he's been perfectly healthy.

Re: Where do I get a puppy?
If you want specific breed, please go to a rescue or a good breeder(but please check out a rescue first). If you want a mixed breed, go to your local pound.

That is good news :)
If you are looking for a specific breed, you can googel it bu typing in rescue + breed+ {enter breed name here}
Also, the akc,org site will have links to clubs & rescue orgs for specific breeds.
The Town of Oyster Bay shelter is where we got our most recent rescur from & they were fantastic to deal with.
