Where do you plan on living?

Original post by zoe282

I know it's none of my business what people spend their money on, but I see on here that people are saying they'd rather put money towards their wedding then towards a house. I was curious where people plan on living after you get married?

FH and I bought a townhouse and it's great to know once we say 'i do' that we get to start our life together in our own home.

Obviously it's everyones own business I was just curious....

Re: Where do you plan on living?

We will continue to rent the house that we are renting now for about 2 years then we will probaby buy a house (in the Massapequa to West Islip area).

The rent is reasonable in this house which will allow us to save a lot for a house.

FH and I don't live together yet. We would like to buy a condo a few months before the wedding so we can fic it up and move our stuff in. This way when we get back from the HM, we can move right in our own place.

We're moving back to our NYC apartment in May and starting to seriously look after we get married.

People keep saying the market's going to get better..............I hope so!

After that we'll buy either an apartment in Manhattan, or a house surrounding NYC (Nassau, Westchester, Greenwich, CT). Who knows. We'll have to see what works for us.

I know someone who bought an INSANE 2 bedroom apartment in Manhattan in an awesome area on the upper west side (in the 70's) with a backyard garden in a full service doorman building for $600K. Thats UNHEARD of for that area...so we might actually stay in NYC if we can find something like that. We'll see....

That would be my dream.

'

if you're willing to spend $600k on apartments have you seen the Oro building complex in brooklyn, and also avalon in LIC and a few others...they have some real gorgeous ones...some with private terrace that is pretty big. One building by me even has maid service, laundry, dry cleaning services in the building, car wash, pool...I know Oro has an indoor pool. Avalon for example is exactly 7 minutes from the city, not sure if youre interested. OR you have to see 'Novo 64' they have gorgeous modern apartments

but if you want the city, then yeah the upper west side is less money now than downtown and other areas

I heart Avalon!!!!! we choose the Glen Cove ones but thought about the LIC ones. Glen cove was more convenient...I would have ended up with a shorter commute but he would be longer...Glen Cove basically is the same commute for both of us...and he grew up in Locust Valley so he knows the ins and outs of the neighborhood!

i like avalon too but honestly they charge a bit too much, the problem with avalon is that if you have an apartment on one side of the building its fine but if you have the back then its horrible bc i take the LIRR and we go RIGHT behind it, i look right into the apartments so those ppl have the noise of the LIRR and on top of that their view isn't the city like one side but its of a train yard and you pay all that money for that its crazy

Just what they want, the train speeding by, I am sure they LOVE that. LOL.

we will rent probably for another 2-3 years then buy a house off Long Island, we are currently considering Virginia Beach. We could swing a house here but I want to be able to work part-time/per diem when we have children and if we stay here that will not be a possibility.

i know its crazy, i thought apartments right by the train were always less meanwhile look what they charge lol...but they can do it bc thats why theres so many city ppl moving to LIC and astoria...its very close to the city and although we all think 600k for an apartment is crazy for them its actually not bad compared to the city. We would love to get a place in astoria but the price you pay isn't worth what you get anymore.

its the same thing in Nassau, not much property, smalls rooms....that is why we are mostly looking in suffolk. That way when I get my private practice going, I dont have to worry about the commute!

good luck!

We're most likely buying a 2 br 2 bath condo and then in about 2 years after the wedding, we will buy a house without selling the condo with the intention of renting out the condo and keeping an extra piece of real estate.
