I know it's none of my business what people spend their money on, but I see on here that people are saying they'd rather put money towards their wedding then towards a house. I was curious where people plan on living after you get married?
FH and I bought a townhouse and it's great to know once we say 'i do' that we get to start our life together in our own home.
Obviously it's everyones own business I was just curious....

We are living in my co-op. Looking at houses but want to actually make offers 3-5 months after wedding. We found our *dream* home and hopefully it will be available then.
it will be even less after the wedding so that is a great idea
QUESTION for the ladies who bought houses or condos/co-op's recently, what interest did you get it at? Ive done the mortgage calculator for places im interested in and even going down 1% makes a difference so i wanna see what its at now
sorry i didn't read the whole thread so maybe you got your answer... i bought my co-op in Forest Hills in June of 2006 at 6.25% for a 30 year fixed. I am sure they are lower but i doubt that much - I was lucky to get that rate at the time

my parents made us an apt upstairs - no separate entrance and its small but rent free so hey i am down for that!
my parents are very respectful of our privacy, well, they will be once we are married now i STILL cant close the door when he is over but once we are married they will be fine ( i hope! LOL)
anyway, we are going to save up for two years and try to get a house - we won't leave Queens so it will be a little harder for us to look BUT like Denise said there are some beautiful parts of Queens so I think it will be worth it in the end!
wow sweet deal if you're gonna live rent free...you'll be able to save.
When you do buy a house, are you planning to find a house in howard beach?
come on denise you know me. . .i can't leave 'the beach'
we are going to try really hard but if not we will just stay close by!

Re: Where do you plan on living?
i just bought my place last year; it's a 2 bedroom co-op and over 1,000 square feet so it'll be fine for us for now.
we'll start saving for a house but no way am i moving for the next three years. I want to stay in the neighborhood if we can afford to; if not i'll do great neck or rockville centre or somewhere on a good train line. I hate commuting though

We're moving back to our NYC apartment in May and starting to seriously look after we get married.
People keep saying the market's going to get better..............I hope so!
After that we'll buy either an apartment in Manhattan, or a house surrounding NYC (Nassau, Westchester, Greenwich, CT). Who knows. We'll have to see what works for us.
I know someone who bought an INSANE 2 bedroom apartment in Manhattan in an awesome area on the upper west side (in the 70's) with a backyard garden in a full service doorman building for $600K. Thats UNHEARD of for that area...so we might actually stay in NYC if we can find something like that. We'll see....
That would be my dream.

if you're willing to spend $600k on apartments have you seen the Oro building complex in brooklyn, and also avalon in LIC and a few others...they have some real gorgeous ones...some with private terrace that is pretty big. One building by me even has maid service, laundry, dry cleaning services in the building, car wash, pool...I know Oro has an indoor pool. Avalon for example is exactly 7 minutes from the city, not sure if youre interested. OR you have to see 'Novo 64' they have gorgeous modern apartments
but if you want the city, then yeah the upper west side is less money now than downtown and other areas

yeah, i figured they were lower - I was thinking of refinancing but it's not worth it b/c of closing costs

we looked at model condos yesterday on queens blvd near 67th drive... asking $700k for a 2 bedroom. I know it's a condo, but I still think that's nuts. they have terraces and pretty good amenities but i didn't love the layout - kitchen was great but BRs and LR were all on the smaller end. but it might be worth looking at - not far from the subway either (but right on QB service road) and the price is def negotiable
idk, i like my place for now. I definitely want a house eventually though

that definitely makes a difference in the scheme of a few hundred thousand - i would have loved a rate below 6% but i closed the day my rate lock expired and the rates were up to 6.7%! so i was glad to get it when i did

did you look at the Novo 64 condo's? those are the new condo's and yeah they are real expensive...a studio is $400k One place we love is the hampton court in kew gardens...there is also one listing i saw which is dara gardens building right by austin which seemed nice, so i'll want to check that building out.

those are the ones that have an office right on austin? we pass the sign all the time - I think that's them. Yeah, so much
i looked in LIC before i got my place and a 1 bedroom was $400 but it was far from the subway on the water and I could only afford 10% down so i didn't do it. I couldn't deal with the 20 minute walk to the subway

yup they have an office right on austin next to an italian restaurant.
yeah i like LIC, well its nice now they really developed it over the years bc it was not like this at all...but the prices are insane now...some areas are great bc it is right next to the train and just 1 or 2 stops from the city.

Re: Where do you plan on living?
We have lived together for 5 years now. We've been in our current apt (upstairs of a house, absentee landlord) for 2 years, and we are staying for another 2, if we can tolerate the tenants below us for that long. We are getting married in Oct 08 and plan to move to New Hampshire in the fall of 2009. We were thinking about renting first in the area we think we like, but we've been going through some crap lately with the tenants below us as you can see from this post so I really, really don't want to rent anymore. We're going to check out the area very carefully, visit it a lot, explore it, talk to the people who live there, etc - really get a feel for it, and hopefully be able to buy from here. Looking forward to it!

I heart Avalon!!!!! we choose the Glen Cove ones but thought about the LIC ones. Glen cove was more convenient...I would have ended up with a shorter commute but he would be longer...Glen Cove basically is the same commute for both of us...and he grew up in Locust Valley so he knows the ins and outs of the neighborhood!

Re: Where do you plan on living?
Well this is how we planned it out... All of our money is going to go towards the wedding that we are paying for ourselves then when we come back from the honeymoon we will live in the downstairs basement of FHs parents house But as soon as we open those envelopes we are putting a down payment on a house and hopefully we only have to live at FHs parents house for like 2 or 3 months.
