Where do you plan on living?

Original post by zoe282

I know it's none of my business what people spend their money on, but I see on here that people are saying they'd rather put money towards their wedding then towards a house. I was curious where people plan on living after you get married?

FH and I bought a townhouse and it's great to know once we say 'i do' that we get to start our life together in our own home.

Obviously it's everyones own business I was just curious....

if you're willing to spend $600k on apartments have you seen the Oro building complex in brooklyn, and also avalon in LIC and a few others...they have some real gorgeous ones...some with private terrace that is pretty big. One building by me even has maid service, laundry, dry cleaning services in the building, car wash, pool...I know Oro has an indoor pool. Avalon for example is exactly 7 minutes from the city, not sure if youre interested. OR you have to see 'Novo 64' they have gorgeous modern apartments

but if you want the city, then yeah the upper west side is less money now than downtown and other areas

If we're going to spend that much (which we don't have - but I can dream!!! ), I'd definitely stay in manhattan.

Our building right now is pretty fantastic, but if we want to buy in our complex they START at 900K for a 1 bedroom apartment - 570 sq. feet (upper west side).

Re: Where do you plan on living?

After Christmas we are going to start looking for real. (currently we each still live a t home)But I've been looking a little bit online. And I'm so confused
I'm trying to figure out what we can afford. And going on sites where you can plug in how much you can put for down payment and motgage rates and then it gives yiou an 'approximate' monthly payment. How close are those numbers to the real thing? Because looking at it, of course depending what town you're looking in, it seems like it may actually be less to make a mortgage payment than pay rent every month.
If that's really the case then I think it would be better to invest in a house than rent a place right?
Also, how much does it really cost to own a house per month? Once you figure in insurance, electric, etc etc?
I'm so confused and overwhelmed

yup exactly, i remember when my hairdresser bought an apartment in the city last year...it was 1 bedroom and very small and it was just a little over $900k, thats insane for such a small space.

many times on the site it will show you less than what you would pay...the calculator thing can give you an estimate but for example all of the mortgage calculators show 6% interest, you don't know if thats what you'll get. Right now prices are down but interest rates are up so you might get a little higher of an interest rate...last night fh and i were looking at apartments online, we did the calculator thing that the real estate site had, but then fh went to this other site that is just for mortgages and getting pre-approved, well they had a calculator that was ALOT more detailed, for instance we had to put our monthly salary on it and alot more info and it ended up being more than what the real estate site had, plus theres a bunch of other charges that are not on the real estate site, but it will be close to it nothing to way off for the most part. Of course also depends on your credit and what you will get for an interest rate. If you have great credit then you should be able to get it for lower and even if you have great credit as long as you don't have any liens.

BUT yes many times it can come out less than renting.

it depends on the house and what it runs on, whether its oil heating or not, electric bill then things like cable and all that...also depends on condition you buy the house, sometimes you need to do work to it

FH and i currently live in the basement of his parents
But come the spring/summer his grandparents will move into where we are now and we will get there 2 bedroom apartment in Whitestone. Then buy a house in about 3-4 yrs.

we now live in the upstairs of FH's parents house which we have made into an apartment. i think we're gonna have to continue living here for at least a year to save money for a house. i wish we could have our own place right away, but it's the smarter thing to do. and i love FH's parents so i don't mind living w them and i don't think they mind us staying here for a while.

Fh and I have an apartment in Huntington. Landlords are very nice and they go out on their boat every weekend in the summer so we have the backyard and the POOL to use!

I would love to buy a house but that's going to take a little while. With all of the thousands of dollars we'll be getting for our wedding, it will probably be enough for a down payment, right?

After the wedding, FH will move into my Condo in NJ... Since it's only a 1BDRM, we'll look to move somewhere else in the Tri State area when the little ones arrive
