I know it's none of my business what people spend their money on, but I see on here that people are saying they'd rather put money towards their wedding then towards a house. I was curious where people plan on living after you get married?
FH and I bought a townhouse and it's great to know once we say 'i do' that we get to start our life together in our own home.
Obviously it's everyones own business I was just curious....

Re: Where do you plan on living?
we are renting right now in Long Beach. We will prolly stay there for a couple years after we are married. Unless FH and I win the lotto, I don't see how we could ever own a house in the NYC area. im hoping we can move out of state one day and live in a nice house! I have high standards for what I will spend my money on as far as houses go. I grew up out of state and my parents own a nice 5 bedroom house that is now worth about 395,000 and on LI it would be worth over a million! And I don't want to raise my kids in a house that isn't as nice as what i was brought up in. If I grew up here I would prolly not worry as much about the prices compared to other places, but I didn't, so it always bothers me!

Sounds like some nice places. I think having your own space is very importnat when entering 'newlywedom' (if that's a word)
i completely agree that is why i am so hesitant to move into the apt above my future in laws....i mean it is free and it is a huge nice apt i am just nervous it is going to cause some trouble living in their house...meaning they are going to be bothering us when we do want to have our privacy...i guess we will see how it works out but i kinda wish fh would fold and decide on just renting an apt of our own. but he said he doest want to put money into something that he doesnt own
FH and I lived in an apartment for 1 1/2 years and then moved into the apartment at FIL's. FSIL and her husband lived there first but after they bought their house and moved out we decided that we would move in. At first I was really hesitant and didnt want to leave our apartment. I felt like we were taking a step backwards by livng in a 2 family with FIL's right upstairs BUT they offered us lower rent than we were paying (not significant but enough to help) and the apartment was practically brand new so we decided it would be good for us to just take it.......We've been living there since last November and its really working out. Its not bad at all. They NEVER bother us or intrude on us. They are VERY respectful of our privacy. I enjoy having them so close and I am really going to miss them when we move! So unless your FILs are crazy people you should be fine!
thanks Nicole...they are a little crazy. FBIL and his now wife lived there before us as well. and they had some problems such as my FMIL coming in and doing their dishes when they were gone to work since she was bored. or his grandma vacumming and moving things around-she is crazy haha. but my fh is like i said before very outspoken and doesnt take crap from his parents..so he has told them and will continue to tell them no intrusion and let us have our privacy...but like you said i am sure it will be fine

A girl after my own heart!!!! I am from out of state also and my family lives in a big house with an inground pool and I could get a mansion there for 450,000.....here i can get a house built when my grandparents bought their house with no central air! I have high standards also, my FH doesn't have the same views as me so it's going to be different when we go to our new place, cause our townhouse now is brand new and we paid 250,000 (next generation housing) I can't see myself paying so much for so little around here!

IT IS hard bc in some areas you get so little for what you pay...the areas i like the average is $700k and up and some of these are just 2-3 bedrooms, nothing crazy or anything like that. This is the problem we're having too. But i also don't mind living in an apartment, but even that can be difficult bc for example we like long island city in queens and would LOVE a loft there but those lofts are over 600k for 2 bedrooms which really is not worth it.
I know not everybody is gonna see the same as i do about this but i also see that part of what im spending money on isn't just the house or apartment itself but everything else around me too. I know if we moved out of NY we can get alot more for our money but at the same time the lifestyle would be something i personally don't like, but thats just me bc i know theres many who love that lifestyle and prefer it so for them it is great and works out. But for me i also see it as not only paying for the house or apt but also for everything that is around me...so maybe a place where i love the area, where its convenient for me bc of work and close to our families. Also being close to the city, even restaurants around us and neighborhood in general. But everyone is differently
and don't get me wrong, i would LOVE to get a 5 bedroom mansion for $450,000 in nyc

I think queens and the city are a little different then out here in nassau and suffolk. In a city atmosphere you have small space but like you said you pay for what's around you. You can walk places and such. here we are in the suburbs still...there are as many things to do in my families house in PA as there is here....I think that's the difference I see.

the areas in queens we are looking at are residential areas and suburban like, we have commercial areas nearby but not live in a commercial area. Thats the thing, i dont want to live in a small space, the apartments we've looked at are decent size, some of them are even a duplex so you'll have a big downstairs then have the 2nd floor with 2 or 3 bedrooms and 2 nd bathroom. I know alot of ppl think queens doesnt have residential areas but there are.
Well another thing for me is that i wont move away from our families so i cant do that now...but also yeah i guess it depends where else, for example fh has a house in PA and i like going for the weekend but its just not what i am used to. I am sure if i grew up there then yeah of course it would be different.
I live in an apartment right now and its two bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms and one has a jacuzzi, a big kitchen, separate dining room, spacious living room, theres a long hall to separate it from the bedrooms and lots of closet space.

ITS A WAste bc i never use it lol but it'll be good for selling
yeah everybody gets used to different things, and everybody looks for something different. As long as we all find what we're looking for
The apartment we currently are interested in, is in kew gardens, queens in a residential area...its also right by forest park, which is this big park with horse back riding, golf course and a bunch of other things...its very naturey(thats not evena word) but also very nearby to a commercial area. This is the 3d map of the location of the apartment
we're looking for a house in Suffolk - south shore. West Islip / West Babylon / Babylon...
Woo Hoo...won't you be my neighbor!!!

Re: Where do you plan on living?
My parents own two houses in LIC, so we'll be moving into one of the apts. My grandparents actually used to live there, so it's a HUGE 2 bedroom, with hardwood floors, a living room, dining room, eat in kitchen, bathroom. Plus, we have use of the finished basement- perfect for get togethers and parties and the backyards of both houses. They are attached and my grandparents combined them long ago. Laundry in the basement too. My parents are charging us 1/2 of what the current tenants pay..it's really a great deal!

Sounds like some nice places. I think having your own space is very importnat when entering 'newlywedom' (if that's a word)
i completely agree that is why i am so hesitant to move into the apt above my future in laws....i mean it is free and it is a huge nice apt i am just nervous it is going to cause some trouble living in their house...meaning they are going to be bothering us when we do want to have our privacy...i guess we will see how it works out but i kinda wish fh would fold and decide on just renting an apt of our own. but he said he doest want to put money into something that he doesnt own
Its your own entrance and everything...it should be fine. The money you can save from that will be GREAT. Don't go renting an apt, you will not save that way (trust me). You will have too many other expenses along with rent.

Re: Where do you plan on living?
FH currently lives with his grandparents. What we want to do, is make their house into a legal 'mother-daughter' and have an apt built on the 2nd floor for us. His grandparents would be moved down to the 1st floor (since they really should not be going up and down the stairs anyway). And then his parents said that once Grandma and Grandpa are no longer around (like 20 years from now we hope LOL) - they would sell us the house at that point. So now we are on the hunt to find a good contractor who will do this for a decent price!!

my parents made us an apt upstairs - no separate entrance and its small but rent free so hey i am down for that!
my parents are very respectful of our privacy, well, they will be once we are married now i STILL cant close the door when he is over but once we are married they will be fine ( i hope! LOL)
anyway, we are going to save up for two years and try to get a house - we won't leave Queens so it will be a little harder for us to look BUT like Denise said there are some beautiful parts of Queens so I think it will be worth it in the end!

Re: Where do you plan on living?
We're moving back to our NYC apartment in May and starting to seriously look after we get married.
People keep saying the market's going to get better..............I hope so!
After that we'll buy either an apartment in Manhattan, or a house surrounding NYC (Nassau, Westchester, Greenwich, CT). Who knows. We'll have to see what works for us.
I know someone who bought an INSANE 2 bedroom apartment in Manhattan in an awesome area on the upper west side (in the 70's) with a backyard garden in a full service doorman building for $600K. Thats UNHEARD of for that area...so we might actually stay in NYC if we can find something like that. We'll see....
