Hi I told my dad the other day I want to get married at the reception hall and he pretty much freaked out he was upset that I didn't want to get married in a church. I was raised catholic but I hardly ever go to church and my FH is not very religious. I think it's easier for our guest too. Is anyone else having to deal with something like this?? I feel like people are looking down on me for not wanting a church ceremony.

Re: Where is everyone having their ceremony
I am getting married at my reception hall. I am episcapalian and FI is Catholic, and the problem was I didn't want to get married in his church and he didn't want to get married in mine, so I was an easy choice to pick the reception hall to get married.

Re: Where is everyone having their ceremony
I am in the same exact situation as you are. I was raised Catholic and my family is extremely religious. However, my FH is protestant (although he doesn't belong to a specific denomination).
I spoke to my family about my ceremony plans and they didn't take it very well in the beginning. They wanted me to be traditional and they expected my FH to convert to catholicism (which he will never do).
Ultimately, I convinced my parents that the most important thing about my ceremony for me would be to have my friends and family gathered around us in a place where everyone will feel welcome.
People will always have their opinions, especially if you are the first in the family to go non-traditional, but ultimately it is your day and you need to make sure you and your FH are completely happy, whatever you choose.

I was also raised Catholic..and can't remember the last time I set foot in the church (confirmation maybe??)
Anywa, my FH is lutheran...so a church was out of the question.
We are getting married @ the reception hall.

Re: Where is everyone having their ceremony
This is my problem! I was raised Catholic - but i only go to church for Xmas and Easter. I REALLY have always wanted to get married outside - so I am having the ceremony outside at the reception hall (weather permitting) - plus I just like the ease of having it all in one spot.
Well my mom was NOT thrilled. She keeps trying to convince me to have it in the church. Or she wants to find a Catholic priest who would consider doing a wedding outside (mine won't). I really don't care who marries me though - as long as I am married!

Re: Where is everyone having their ceremony
I'm sorry to hear that.
My parents are extremely religious Born Again Christians - and they have no probelm with my outdoor ceremony. They believe you don't have to be in a church to be 'in God's House.' He is everywhere. Try that out on them and see what they say!

Thanks everyone.
I'm glad I'm not the only one that had this dilemma. The only thing that matters to me is having my family and friends by my side.

Re: Where is everyone having their ceremony
I used to go to church all the time and stopped after college...time issues I guess. My FI and I are both Catholic and even though we haven't been good about going to church I can't imagine not getting married in my church...sentimental I guess! and my mom AND grandma would freak out if I didn't get married in a church..both are very religious!

Re: Where is everyone having their ceremony
this has been my biggest headache since I got engaged. My family is very religious Catholic. I'm not, and my FH is not either. We decided to get married outside and it's beautiful at the Vineyards. I've always wanted an outdoor wedding, and it does make it easier for your guests and everyone gets to witness the ceremony. (not everyone comes to the church) I thought a Catholic Monsignor was going to be able to marry us and as it turns out he can not because we are both baptized Catholics. we are 'supposed' to be getting married within the church walls I guess. Now, I have to find an officiant.....I didn't want to get married in church but someone marrying us who represents the church was just as good. now, I'm at the beginning again.

I'm having my ceremony at the reception. Both my fiance and I aren't religious so it worked out for us.

Re: Where is everyone having their ceremony
We're getting married at the reception hall. I'm Jewish, and FH is Catholic, so this was the easiest thing for us. Neither one of our parents seem to mind. We are going to try to incorporate something from each of our religions, like a unity candle and breaking the glass.

Re: Where is everyone having their ceremony
I was raised Catholic (12 years of catholic school) FH is ethnically Jewish (non-practising)
We are being married by our Unitarian minister (we attend the Unitarian Church in Huntington) at the reception hall.

Re: Where is everyone having their ceremony
Have you booked a hall yet? One of my BM wanted to get married at her hall but she wanted the 'feel' of a church. She got married at George Washington Manor, which has a separate chapel building. It was great.

Re: Where is everyone having their ceremony
Mom was pretty ticked off and then FH's parents were like 'WHAT? What do you mean you're NOT getting married in a church???' In the end we went with what was going to make US happy. We're getting married at the reception hall outside with all the pretty flowers!

Re: Where is everyone having their ceremony
I can relate. Both FI and I are Catholic, however he was married before- for 2 years (no kids) about 5 years ago and believe it or not the annulment with the Catholic church is STILL not done. Neither FI or I are religious and we were going to get married at the hall, but then my grandmother went on a crying binge and it was just drama. Soooooooooo we are getting married in a Lutheran church by his fire dept. chaplain and once the annulment is done, we will have a ceremony at the Catholic Church. I hate feeling guilty about my own wedding....
SuzBride- I really wanted to have it outdoors as well- at sunset. I hope you have a beautiful day :)

Re: Where is everyone having their ceremony
It's strange when I got engaged FH and I agreed that we'd have the ceremony at the reception hall but now I'm starting to feel bad about not having it at a church. I haven't booked a hall yet so I guess after that happens I'll take it from there. I'm out again this weekend looking!!
We were going to have it at the hall but my side of the family did not approve. Plus I thought about it and always envisioned myself walking down the aisle of a church so thats what we are doing.
