Hi I told my dad the other day I want to get married at the reception hall and he pretty much freaked out he was upset that I didn't want to get married in a church. I was raised catholic but I hardly ever go to church and my FH is not very religious. I think it's easier for our guest too. Is anyone else having to deal with something like this?? I feel like people are looking down on me for not wanting a church ceremony.

Re: Where is everyone having their ceremony
We're getting married at the hall. The rabbi will do the ceremony there. You should do what will make YOU happy.

Re: Where is everyone having their ceremony
Well, I'm Catholic and FH is Jewish and both sides of our family wanted us to have a priest and a rabbi at the reception hall, but we are both against it. Neither of us are religious in any way and want to have a simple ceremony and not have God or anyone else mentioned.

I used to go to church all the time and stopped after college...time issues I guess. My FI and I are both Catholic and even though we haven't been good about going to church I can't imagine not getting married in my church...sentimental I guess! and my mom AND grandma would freak out if I didn't get married in a church..both are very religious!
same here i could have written that post

Re: Where is everyone having their ceremony
I can kind of relate. I was raised Catholic as well. My FH is not very religious. We are having an outdoor ceremony at East Wind. Our parents are fine with our decision, but a lot of my family members are shockad and appaulled at my decision not to marry in a church. It's the whole 'well your marriage willnot be recognized by The Church' I'm ok with that. Plenty of reputable officiants can give you pretty much the same type of ceremony without being in a church.

Re: Where is everyone having their ceremony
Im Jewish and we typically have the ceremonies in the same place as the receptions. We also get dressed at the location so we eliminate the need for limos.
The only issue arises when dealing with catering at a synogogue where kosher catering can be very expensive.

Re: Where is everyone having their ceremony
My father reacted the same way-I always wanted to get married in a church but FH is not overly religious. FH said that if I wanted to get married in a church then we would look into it and see if they would marry us (he was only baptised) and we found most places only required the baptism so we are getting married at the cutest church that was my first choice-Infant Jesus in Port Jefferson.

Re: Where is everyone having their ceremony
scott and i aren't religious at all so having a church ceremony would be out of the question for us. so instead, we decided on the brooklyn bridge because of what it stood for. and hey! you can't beat the view! =)

Re: Where is everyone having their ceremony
We're also having the ceremony at the East Wind (outside hopefully!!) I'm catholic, FH is presbyterian and he really wanted his minister from home to marry us. I didn't feel strongly one way or another and thought it would be nice to have someone we know marry us. Part of me kind of wanted the church ceremony but once we asked his minister he said that it would be better to do it on site because he would be considered a 'visiting clergy' to another church and did not feel comfortable with that. So we're having it onsite.
