Where should I live? (xpost)

Where should I live? (xpost)

I know similar topics have been posted, but I need some help and suggestions.
I live in Park Slope. I LOVE it here, but absolutely cannot afford to buy here. Its disgusting. A small 2 bedroom condo is at least 699K. Its crazy!

Soooo, We are thinking of Queens or Nassau.

We are looking for a neighborhood with a reasonable commute to the city or brooklyn, with a good school system, with stuff to do, and with a decent sized Jewish population (we are reform, but just don't want our kids to be the only Jewish kids in school).
we are thinking of

Forest Hills
Long Beach
Merrick

If anyone lives in anyone of these areas, or can recommend an area that sounds like what I described, I'd greatly appreciate it.

TIA!

I am not familiar with the places that you just mentioned but have you thought of Riverdale in the Bronx? It has everything you are looking for.

It's really nice, its got some of the best schools easy commute in to the city.
Also the houses are beautiful and cheaper than those in the city and Li.

I never looked into that at all, thanks.

Please keep the suggestions coming ladies!

I would have to second Riverdale.. my father lives there.. some of the best school around! Top notch areas...

I live in Edgewater NJ. Im 5 min from the GWB, 10 min from the Lincoln and Holland Tunnel! Im on the Hudson River.. local parks, 2 ferrys, etc. The area is BEAUTIFUL! Right next to Ft. Lee...I take the ferry and bus to NYC to go out.. Im in property Managment also in Edgewater and most of my tenants work in NYC ( 95% ) the schools are GREAT!!!!! EXCELLENT! Thats whY i moved here.. if you look up places you will find its expensive.. alot of places 1million and better.....but you can get a great deal on a nice condo or house if you look and get to know the area.. anyway I know you didnt mention NJ BUT I thought I would.. ( Ft. Lee as well )

plainview

Plainview is great, I grew up there but it has gotten pretty obnoxious and even all my friends that hav moved back there say the say thing. I would recommend Syosset over Plainview. Its one of those towns where if you build it people will buy it but it is on the expensive side if you are looking to be a first time home owner, taxes are high.

I suggest Bayside or Douglaston if you are looking to stay in Queens

First off, are you looking for a house or a coop/condo.

I don't recommend Long Beach, the schools are not so great.

Merrick is good but you need to go south of Merrick Rd for a more Jewish population and I would also suggest South Bellmore if you are looking into that area.

Thank you ladies! Great ideas!
I feel like if I am moving out of Park Slope, I want a house, but I wouldn't totally rule out a condo if it was spacious.
In Park Slope, the condos are soooo small!
My best friend's parents moved to edgewater about 8 years ago. I love it there, but everyone tells me that NJ has the highest taxes.

I would say Merrick. My friends all grew up in Long Beach and I hate having to go their. It's annoying to get to by car and everyone is right on top of each other worse then anywhere else.

Plainview, Syosset, Great Neck and S. Merrick are all great suggestions...they are all very pricey, though.

Other towns to consider with reasonable commutes and a Jewish population...Bellmore, Wantagh, East Meadow. And, if you can afford it....Roslyn, Manhasset, Manhasset Hills are other towns to look at.

Sigh, I also recently left Park Slope- 2nd street between 6th and 7th avenue. It was an amazing experience and I miss the lifestyle.

With that said, this thread is helpful as I am also looking at neighborhoods.

As far as Queens- Forest Hills is amazing, nearby Kew Gardens is just as lovely. Schools are very good and there's lots to do as far as dining and shopping.

I'd recommend Jericho too. GREAT school system, right near the Hicksville LIRR. It is a bit expensive though.

How about Lynbrook? I grew up there and the school system is good. I'd say there is a 50/50 mix of Jewish/non-Jewish people in the town, although most live on the south side of town closer to Hewlett. There's 2 train stations, and the commute to the city is about 30 min on the train. I don't know what your house budget is, but I'd say the average house is around 500K

I already answered on NW board but if youre looking for a house, forest hills is pretty pricey. Theres LOTS of condo's and co-ops in the area. Even now when i just checked MLSLI.com, and started and the lowest range, the first house that came up for forest hills $528,000 and that was for a 2 bedroom. And that definitely is around starting price for a home in the area. Many go up alot higher.

THere were a few houses in kew gardens in the $400-500k range, but cant guarantee the condition would be great for those starting in that range.

I'd say plainview...
Merrick you would need to be south of merrick road and the houses down there can get a bit pricey.

Plainvew taxes are higher, then Merrick I believe. You can probably get a bigger house for the money in Bellmore/Merrick but you have to go south to be in a Jewish area. Plainview is overall a better area. Merrick can get a lot more diverse, there are 3 high schools in the district and Plainview JFK is by far a better environment than Bellmore JFK. I'm a teacher I know the inside workings of those schools.

Bayside is ok if you want to stay in Queens. I'm not as familiar with Queens but I know there are areas there.

The 5 towns is full of Jews, too...Hewlett, Woodmere, Lawrence, Cedarhurt and Inwood (But Inwood less than the others)

bayside is more of an italian neighborhood. Its diverse too but when i think of bayside i think of mostly italian, and also a very large asian population too

Re: Where should I live? (xpost)

The five towns is fairly jewish but more orthodox and conservative.

I live in Bayside, I am Jewish, it is has a mix of Jewish, Italian and Asian. I am reformed as well.

I Grew up in Plainview, live in Bayside now and will be moving out to Commack after the wedding. I have family in Plainview, Woodbury, and Manhasset. Any of these areas is good for reformed Jews. I pesonally would not move to the five towns, it is a very religious area, which if you are not Jewish do not know it's almost like a different religion than reformed Jews. Lawrence HS is not a good school district which includes Inwood as well. Many of the Jews over there go to private Yeshiva.

I am not a fan of city schools either but if I had to live in Queens, I would choose Bayside, Forest Hills, or Jamaica Estates. Most of the kids in my neighborhood go to Townsend Harris. As a teacher and a Jew, I am very bias to living in particiular neighborhoods.

If you want more information on LI neighborhoods that are best for Education and that are affordable, you can FM me.
