where to live - apartments

Original post by betani

so my fiance and i are currently living with my parents and commuting to the city for work. the commute and living situation are killing us and we were wondering if you girls had any suggestions for good places to look. we're in bay shore right now, so anything closer to the city would be WORNDERFUL. we're thinking about 1/2 hour closer and on a major lirr stop. any suggestions?

tia!

We are on the Lynbrook/Malverne border and my dad commutes in all the time. Walking distance to two train stations, that way you can pick and choose. Both around a 30 min travel time and a good area too!

DH & I live in Forest Hills. I absolutely LOVE it here. It's so beautiful...quiet, peaceful, everything around us..yet still has a 'city'ish feel in certain parts...and only 1 stop on the LIRR to manhattan! I'm totally in LOVE with our neighborhood. We looked here, along with Kew Gardens which was also really nice. They both have REALLY reasonable prices too. good luck!

ps: a car ride to the city from where I am in forest hills takes under 10 minutes....and we're right off the jackie robinson so the commute to the island is SO easy! especially when people come to visit here.

i LOVE that area. i lived there for four years (well, clinton hills, but right on the border) until i moved to tx for a year i'd go back there in a heartbeat but we're looking for something a bit cheaper and that can accomidate our new car.

I live in the city, all the way downtown- and I LOVEEE it down here!!! So if you do decide to move into the city I would definitely recommend checking out the financial district... but, if you don't want to move INTO the city yet, just near it- forest hills is very pretty. FH and I looked there too just for fun and you can get a lot more space for your $$ and it's not far from the city at all!

see, we both lived in brooklyn for a number of years, but would like to eventually buy something on long island (and i'd like to eventually change my job to out here too). plus it's closer to all our friends and family and since we've bought a car this past year we want something that can accomidate that too.

Clinton Hill? Any chance you went to Pratt?

All the same, I second Bayside/Flushing if you were considering Queens. The parking isnt always the best, but the commute is pretty short and its easy to get to LI.

As for Long Island, my FH and I just moved from out of state to Mineola. Its about a 35 minute commute, walking distance to everything you could need (doctors, food shopping, bars) and since its a major LIRR hub there are trains much more often than other stops on the LIRR. You can also try New Hyde Park, Rockville Center, Floral Park, Bellerose etc... decent pricing and tons of rentals. Good parking in all areas

Bayside in Queens is good, especially if you have cars. Astoria and Forest Hills are great, especially if you don't have a car. If you want to stay in LI, I agree with others that mentioned Lynbrook or Valley Stream. FH is in VS (walking distance to the Gibson station) and in the morning, I catch the 8:06 train and it gets into Penn at 8:42.

Astoria is VERY close to the city-just minutes away especially if you work midtown, ditmars the furthest part of astoria takes 13 mins to lexington. LIC is an 8 minute train ride to grand central.
Forest hills and kew gardens, very residential neighborhoods and if you take the LIRR its 17 mins from kew gardens to penn station.
Bayside, whitestone and douglaston, Little neck are good too

I grew up in astoria so i love it there, you have very residential blocks and also commercial areas with lots to do, great restaurants, cafes, lounges and so on.

I live in kew gardens now and also a great neighborhood.

I like LIC now too, WOW this neighborhood changed ALOT over the past years, i remember even not that long ago and it was nothing like it is now they really built it up. Fh's mom was born and raised in LIC and even she cant believe it.

In astoria theres alot of houses that have driveways and garages so it depends. Also depends what area you live in and what blocks...I grew up there and my block wasnt that bad for parking, and FH still lives there and he has 2 parking spots in his driveway but alot of times i park on the street and we find parking right away by him

I graduated in 2003 and was a drawing major (took a bunch of ID classes too) so we overlapped by like a year? I totally wonder if I knew you - like if you lived in dorms (i was an RA for a while..)

uh.... J, G, A, D, N, 2, 3... there are others, but i don't take them all... i mean, there will be no problem getting there since it's commuting central (or so it feels), but if fh can jump on the lirr and be to work in 1/2 hour, it'll probably take me a little longer by subway.

well its not that bad actually...In astoria its the 'N' train but to brooklyn it would take long so i would say it would be better off to take the N train to 42nd street(about 20 mins) and then take the 2 or 3 there. Or you can take N to 34th street and take the A from there. OR if you move by the LIRR just take the lirr to penn station and over there you can take the A, 2 or 3...would you ever consider driving there? from astoria its pretty close to brooklyn, the bqe is in astoria and its a few mins to brooklyn.
