it doesnt really matter... just dont tell the church you booked the RH first... they dont really like to hear that...
my opinion is the RH because its where the bulk of the cost of the wedding will be spent... it should be where you want it to be

Re: Where to start- church or venue?
We searched for halls first and once we saw one we liked we told them to hold it for a couple of days then we went to the church to make sure we could get the date and we were all set.

We did the same thing, but don't tell the church. They see their contribution as the 'most important' and thus what should be booked first!

Re: Where to start- church or venue?
We booked our RH first and then found out with our church if the date was available. The BM also put in the contract that we had until a certain date to cancel if it didn't work with the church. That made us feel better so we wouldn't lose our deposit if the church didn't have our date and we needed to cancel. Good Luck.

Re: Where to start- church or venue?
Since the RH is bound to fill with dates faster than your church, I would definitely book the RH first.

Thanks for all your advice! Is it a bad omen to lie to a priest prior to your wedding :)

Re: Where to start- church or venue?
It doesn't really matter. FH and I went to the church first and just made sure of what dates were available. After that we booked a RH and then went back and booked the church.

RH because that's where the most money is spent...unless you are really religious or you have a specific church you want to book

Re: Where to start- church or venue?
We booked the Church first because our church was the one thing that we couldn't (rather, wouldnt) change because we wanted to get married in my parrish, which is extremely important to me. Also, we were kinda set on our date - so luckily the Church was available then. So, after the Church was booked, then we started looking at RHs and if they weren't available on our date - we wouldn't look there...

Re: Where to start- church or venue?
The RH is def more likely to book up more than the church, so I definitely recommend checking the hall out first. But when you go to the church, make it seem like you haven't booked the hall yet

Re: Where to start- church or venue?
we wanted an idea of what dates were available in Sep at the church so we had an idea of what to check at the RH. but the church didn't want to tell us anyting about that until we came to speak to the priest and for that we needed to wait to hear from him, make an appt etc. I did manage to squeeze out of the secretary that most dates were open. we then did some preliminary checking with RH, booked it and quickly got to church to get that date.
but the RH was willing to move it if we had difficulties with the church and we knew a second date WAS available so we figured we'd be ok (and we were).
they never asked us about the RH so I don't think it's a big deal to have it done ahead BUT as has been said, if that church and date is important to you, then get the church first.
One thing not mentioned so far - - I think it is important to know when the church will perform the wedding on the different days, Fri, Sat, Sun. In past posts girls have been shocked that it is way earlier or much later than they expected and made for big down times betw church and RH.
so if the church is not critical in those cases where times are not what you like, you may want to check other churches. then that gets you into the game of what dates do the new church have available. so at least check that the church times are good for you in case you also need to do church hopping!!! hope that makes sense.l
