Where were you on this day 4 years ago?

Original post by BKtoLI

I don't know if this has been brought up before, but just like the JFK shooting of our parents generation, 9/11 is one of those things where you always remember where you were that day when you heard the news.

I was at home watching the news. Gabe was not even a month old. Anthony was on his way in to the towers when they collapsed.

Initially I was at the gym getting dressed for work (a bit earlier than normal) when a woman came running into the locker room saying a plane crashed into the WTC. We all thought it was just a small plane and nobody followed up. After leaving the gym with ladies from work, I was standing in front of my office building with all those who got to work early (6 blocks from the towers) watching people jumping from the higher floors (above the flames). We were all in shock and just standing there waiting to see what happened and listening to a colleague tell us how he saw the first plane fly up Greenwich street and purposely hit the first tower He said he went to the balcony and saw the second plane hit too.

We realized we were under attack once we heard about the Pentagon being hit.

As the first tower started to fall (and we heard the rumbling) we all ran into the lobby and waited for the smoke to clear. I hate that scene they always show this time of year of all the people running from the huge cloud of gray smoke & debris. That was me - running from it looking for cover.

Once word of the gas leaks in the area most of us decided to take our chances and walk out of the area. I live in Brooklyn and walked across the Brooklyn bridge.

I had not been able to reach my family but had a friend that I could reach (living in BK) call to let them know I was okay. Once home, I called everyone I knew that could have been in the towers. My ex had taken the day off (a trader) and was helping with the election. A friend from law school (Andrew Zucker) died in the towers that day He was recently married and I later heard that his wife was pregnant with their first child.

I actually voted in the city that morning for the primaries...normally i would have taken the express bus...the BM1, just like Jenna. I was late because i voted so i went to work in the city via train..if i would have neen on the bus i would have been in the battery tunnel when they hit..i worked in mid-town across from grand central station...as i was walking through i saw people crowded around the tv's in the newstand..it was the first tower that was hit..i thought maybe it was a freak accident..then i watched with my own eyes live on tv, the 2nd tower get hit. i ran out and went in to my building...that day i walked from mid-town to the 131st street bridge and in to the bronx with my SIL... her mom lived there and my brother picked us up and took us home.

GOD BLESS THOSE WHO LOST THEIR LIVES AND THEIR LOVED ONES WHO GRIEVE THEM EACH DAY!!!

At the coffee shop in the WTC shops when the first plane hit. Walking out of the building when the second plane hit the second tower b/c we were asked to evacuate.

When the towers fell, I was on Exchange Place and William Street heading towards Water Street trying to catch the ferry (Water Taxi) going to Brooklyn, but unsuccessful.

Since my boss and I were injured, we were sent to St. Vincent's, got checked out, bandaged up, and headed towards his apartment on 81st and 1st.

I'm fortunate to have made it out. Unfortunately, I lost my friends Jude, Rob, and my fourteen of my co-workers.

I was driving to class - it was the second week of grad school and I had just moved out of Brooklyn. I vividly remember listening to Howard Stern and at first I thought it was a joke.

i was in class and no one knew what had happened, because the class was not in one of the main buildings on campus.

i didnt know what had happened until after both towers had already collasped. I'll never forget going to work after class(at that time i was a student worker on campus) and when i got there everyone was crying and I was like what happened and they filled me in and i fell to the floor crying hysterically.

I was in a government building on the National Mall in DC and my co-worker had the tv on and we were watching all of the developments in NYC when someone yelled to look outside. We could see a fireball erupt at the Pentagon. We could hear large explosive sounds which turned out to be F-16s flying over head. Rumors were circulating that there was a car bomb at the State Dept. Since my building was near the White House, we worried about our safety. My boss decided to evacuate all of us, and I helped him spread the word to all of the employees on our floor. Then I hit the streets to walk the long walk home in terror and disbelief.

I was at work when it happenend, I just started new job on 9/10/01 I quit my last job right arcoss the street from the World Trade (90 West) two weeks before that because I really did not want to be in the city anymore. When the towers came down it came down on the former building that I used to work, we were on the last fall and my former company lost two employees, (that could of been me ) God spared my life

In the morning I was at my desk having my breakfast and running outside to hear what was that loud 'bang'. I worked directly across the street. Then I was running for my life with millions of people and crossing the Williamsburg Bridge (the Brooklyn Bridge WAS closer, but I was convinced 'they' would get it too). Luckily, once I walked and ran I was able to catch a bus home that connected with another bus and after a little more walking I was home.

At this time (evening) I was home with my FI (now DH) in shock and shaking. I did not stop crying all day.

I was lucky.

God bless those that weren't so.

Sleeping, until my FI called the house and told me to turn on the T.V .
I immediately jumped out of bed and frantically called my cousin who worked in Tower II. Luckily she was on the bus going in late that day-all of her co workers got out okay.

I was home and saw just a little bit of it on TV so I called my mom to check if my four brothers who work all over NYC had checked in. She said that one of the towers had fallen and I said mom dont be crazy, it is just the angle of the camera shot.... the other building is just behind the other one. At the same time a news helicopter went round and round the one tower standing and I just burst into tears. I ran in and woke FH and we just held each other for hours until I had to go to work.

I was on my way into work and heard it on the radio... I thought they had made a mistake. I went home and sat in front of my TV like a 4 yr old all day in shock that something so large could be so quick, We all just sat and cried.

I was at school. I spent much of the evening in my dorm watching the news, and worrying about my brother who was over in the middle east

I was at day one of my internship for my bachelors degree in social work in Fairfield, CT. My internship was at an elementary school and I was going on a tour of the school with my supervisor. I heard what happened from the school psychologist and we ran into the custodian's office b/c he had a TV. I immediatley called my mom becuase my dad was a stock broker on wall street... THANKFULLY he took the day off...fist time in 35 years. How ironic.

I ran to my apt to find all of my roomates (8 of us) sitting around the table crying. Most of us had parents or family members that worked in the city. I had one roomate who lost her cousin and his new wife who had just been married that June.

What a horrible, horrible day

FH and I were supposed to be in the city that morning, we would have either been on our way there or just getting there. My mom called at about 7am to have me register my sister for school-so that changed our plans. We walked out of the house and our neighbor asked us if we had heard...she told us that a plane had just crashed into one of the towers-needless to say we went running back inside to watch it all-it was so incredibly surreal.
We couldnt talk-we just watched

I was at work hysterically crying waiting to hear if my dad was alive. He worked on the 97th floor of tower 2.

He made it out in time. But lost about 80 co-workers. He worked in that bldg for 26 years.

I met up with him later in the afternoon. He walked to 44th and 10th to meet me, and then we got a ride from a sanitation worker to my parents house in Queens.

Scariest day of my life.

We were is Disney on vacation. I had stayed back at the hotel with my bf (now FI) and sister and everyone eles in my family was at one of the parks. My sister woke me up to tell me to turn on the TV. We watched in awe and tried desperately to get in touch with our family in NY and the rest of our family at the park. Eventually they closed all the parks and sent everyone back to their hotels.

We went down to the bar and the pool and met a man who worked at Cantor Fitzgerald. He was so upset saying, he should have been there, all his coworkers who he had worked with for 25 years were gone. It was the saddest thing to see him sitting there asking himself why he wasn't there, why he was on vacation and alive.

God Bless everyone who was there that day and for those who never made it home. We will never forget you.
