I don't know if this has been brought up before, but just like the JFK shooting of our parents generation, 9/11 is one of those things where you always remember where you were that day when you heard the news.

I was on my way to San fran Airport to catch a flight home when my roomamte ( NYPD) called to say I was not to get on a plane to come home, Becuase of the attacks. Needless to say I was stuck in CA for 6 days trying to get another flight home. Luckily I had relatives in CA or I would have been in deep trouble.

I'll never forget it as long as I live...
It was such a beautiful day. My brother was driving me to work and we were about to jump on the Grand Central headed to Astoria. I saw a huge stream of smoke and asked my brother what it was (I thought it was a smoke stack). He said No Way and turned on 1010 news and we heard what was happening. He then dropped me off at Byzantio cafe where I sat to have my morning coffee and was watching the news coverage on their tv...that's when I saw the second plane hit and I thought it was a replay of the first. Everyone at the cafe was huddled under the tv trying to understand what was going on. No one really was able to grasp how big this was. I was at work 20 minutes later. No one really came in at around 3:30 one of our patients walked in. She walked all the way from the city over the bridge to get to us. I had a knot in my stomach all day trying to contact people to see if they were okay.

In a Physics lab on the corner of Washington Place and Broadway. I don't think I'll ever forget the look on my friend's face when she came running into the lab.

I lived in MA then and I was at work up there. We had access to TV's and watched it on CNN over and over again. I couldn't get in touch with my family until 12 hours later. Thank God everyone in my family got home safe!

Re: Where were you on this day 4 years ago?
I was over in Ireland on a 2 week vacation by myself. I was staying at this guest house and went in to ask some question when the propietors ask, 'What is happening to your country?' I go in and sat on the couch with my hands covering my mouth, shaking, hysterically crying. Cannot get a call in to my parents (who live in NY) and the way BBC was reporting, they were saying cities are getting hit every 20 minutes. Cities. All over the country. I guess they were just getting misinformation. I don't know when I sat down at what sequence of events, because I really was just so out of control. They gave me some whiskey to try to calm me down (as the Irish do) but all I wanted was to come home. I was desperate. So afraid to be in a strange country away from my family without word on how anyone was. God, I will never forget that feeling. It was horrible

I had just started as a Teaching Assistant. I learned about the attacks when I went to the nurses office because they had a radio on..... I thought it was just a small single engine plane had just fly into the first tower..Later on that day we would realize what was happening.
The school started turning into hysteria...parents were picking there kids up left and right....We weren't sure how many parents were working in the WTC..the next day we would realize it was a lot and many were lost I worked in one of the areas who lost the most residents. I started to panic because my brother had just started the Police Academy and they told them that they would now be going down to the WTC indefinetely.

I was at work in the city. I was one of the many who walked home that day. I walked from 4th St & Lafayette over the 59th St. Bridge to Queens. Very surreal experience.

I remembered another thing....My brother and SIL were in Hawaii on vacation on 9/11. They had to wait an extra day to get a flight home. But here's the kicker....that flight that was headed to San Francisco on 9/11 that crashed? My brother was on that same exact flight the day before.

Re: Where were you on this day 4 years ago?
I was on an overnight in Seattle. I had been scheduled to work back to Baltimore that evening. We wound up stuck in the hotel for 3 more days.
I was actually asleep during the whole thing- I was on a PM trip and wasn't scheduled to work until late in the afternoon (pacific time). It was about 8 am (11 am EST) when a crewmember banged on my door. Joe had been sent back to the hotel from the airport once the ground hold was put into effect. He'd checked the Flight Attendant Sign-In sheet and saw my name. He walked into my room, crying, turned on the T.V., handed me my cellphone and said 'You need to call your family.' I needed to watch the TV for a good 10 minutes (while my dear friend Joe repeatedly dialed my family) so I could process what exactly was happening.
It took hours for me to get in touch with my family. I had 63 messages on my cellphone, some from flight attendant friends I hadn't spoken to in years. My poor mother was frantic because she couldn't get ahold of me.
Our hotel we stay in is right by the Sea-Tac airport. I'll never forget hearing the first planes taking off out of there that Friday morning.
We worked home from Seattle all the way to Baltimore (via Nashville). People were so quiet it was unnerving.

My very good friend Ann Marie worked your brother's flight. She was visiting with an old childhood friend while on her overnight in SFO (her friend had recently relocated to the Bay area). Her friend's brother died in Tower 1. As frightening as the thought was that she had just worked that flight, she was so happy she could be there to comfort her friend.

I was in my second week of my first teaching job.. I'll never forget how one of the other teacher told me that a plane had crashed into the WTC. At first we all thought it was a horrible accident, and as the morning went on the rumors were flying around the school like crazy. They wouldn't let us say anything to the kids, they wanted us to carry on like nothing had happened, even though parents were in there picking up their kids all day long. I went home that day in shock and in tears watching the footage over and over again.

I worked in the WTC, so I was in the middle of it all. I worked in tower 2, 73rd fl (the second one that got hit, first to fall). I'm just glad that I could be here today to remember those that we lost that day.

I was starting my second week of teaching at Long Beach HS, and the kids could see the smoke from the cafeteria. It was the most confusing and horrible day of my career.

Since I live close to work, I was still home when the 1st plane hit (I went in late that day). I just finished blow-drying my hair when I saw the black smoke coming out of the WTC on the news. At first, I couldn't believe that a pilot could be so stupid as to fly a plane right into a building that size on such a clear day. (at first, all the news stations claimed it was small private plane). But a few seconds later I realized that it had to be a terrorist attack.
Growing up in Israel you become more aware of these things.
