we went to look at some co-ops this weekend in Forest Hills...we saw two places we really liked both around the same price.
Here are the differences:
1. About 6 blks from the area we really want to be in (close to the local subway, however the express is a couple blks away. The apartment is huge, brand new kitchen w/ dishwasher and microwave. There is NO doorman at all - just a double door w/ locks to get into the building. Laundry room in the basement
2. The second one we saw is only 3 blocks away from the main area - is smaller then the first one. Brand new kitchen (no dishwasher). The building itself is super nice - has 24 hour door man, laundry room (on 1st floor not basement) and also has a small gym.
Both asking same price - what are your thoughts? Go for the bigger one, that is further away or the smaller one w/ the door man and gym.
THANKS

How much smaller?
Is maintenance about the same for both?

Are both apartments in the same condition? Also, how concerned are you about security? I'm not familiar with the neighborhood, so I don't know if certain parts are safer than others. For me, a dishwasher is a big thing. I'd be wiling to walk a few blocks to the train for that. On the other hand, if I was a little unsure about the neighborhood, I'd definitely want a doorman. Sorry, I'm no help !

I'm not sure by footage how much smaller it is - but it def is smaller - and has a completly different lay out.
The neighboorhood is nice, but I am a big scardy cat and would feel safer w/ a doorman - but I don't know - plus w/ the gym we wouldn't have to bring our tredmill (which would save some space) ???????? it's so hard to decide

3 blocks isn't a big diffenence, unless it puts you in a different kind of neighborhood.
My main conern is the doorman. Is it important to you? It wasn't to me , but I was broken into this summer so if it were me, I may go with the doormanm building.
If it wasn't for that I'd go with the bigger one, b/c with 2 people, you have more stuff than you realize.

you want to be in the area you want to be in, you'll have to make sacrifices... thats what we did. we got an apt EXACTLY where we wanted.. even though we saw bigger cheaper apartments further away. this is the area we really wanted to be in.

When do you plan on starting a family? Do you think it will hold all your stuff? Which is more practical for you?
Personally I think you are leaning to #2. If thats what you want go for it. but think in th elong term of things. FOr me pesonally I would say #1
