The average person doesn't buy an engagement ring at Tiffany, Cartier or Van Cleef and Arpel. Though I'd like to meet the guy who does!!! Especially when you live in NY and have access to the 47th street diamond district to spend much less.
Id still rather have the platinum - it looks much better over time and there has to be a reason why it costs more. More than just how it shines.

I'm not sure exactly what your response is supposed to mean, I wasn't trying to make anyone who doesn't have a ring from any of the above feel bad since I don't have a ring from there either...I was simply stating what kind of setting upscale jewelers use since they take great care about their pieces and its longevity...I did it to clarify what others said about setting stones in white gold...I can only speak from experience in saying that Tiffany sets ALL stones in platinum, no matter what metal the ring is made in.
And plenty of average Joes buy engagment rings from Tiffany - not sure if you're aware but their prices start at around $1K.
Best wishes!

From pesonal experience Platinum tends to look dingying and gets pitted over time.

Re: white gold vs. platinum
Sometimes I wonder if this whole thing about platinum being better than gold is yet another way people try to make us spend more money. I'm thinking 30 years or even 40 years from now, if I take good care of my ring, take it to the jeweler for regular check ups and all that good stuff it will be just fine be it platinum or white gold.

I guess in my circle of married and engaged friends, noone paid/pays retail. I never knew anyone personally who ever bought from those places and I am not passing judgement on anyone who does. I admire people who have the means by which to do this. Not everyone can. I think everyone should be proud of what they have and remember it is a symbol of love.

I really think it is what you prefer. They both have their pluses and minuses. Every year or so if you want to re-rhodium white gold, you can butyou don't have to. My mom's engagement ring is 33 years old it's white gold and it looks great to me.
If you want platinum to maintain its sheen and appearance it can also be pretty costly. Although it will stay 'white' it does become dull.
Also, there is at least a $1000 difference between a platinum setting and white gold or yellow gold setting, but, I think that has much to do with the issue of supply and demand rather than its purity as a metal. Years ago when Fh and I were looking at rings for fun the platinum rings setting were not as expensive as they are now. They were always more than the gold, but not as much as they are now.
Truth be told, most people cannot tell the difference between the two. So, if you don't really have a preference, I would say save your money. But, if you do, then go with whichever one you prefer.
I totally agree. My engagement band is platinum and I feel that is cratches very easliey but it will never bend. So for my wedding band I choose white gold because of price, it won't cratch as much and looks just at good as spending $1000.00 more. I was also able to get bigger diamonds on my wedding band with the difference of white gold/platinumn.

Yes but from my experiance even when it is polished it dosent last very long. My sister has to CONSTANTLY have her ring shined up or else it looks SO old and aged and its really not. The scratches and dullness drive her crazy. And there is something you can do about the yelowing of white gold.. have it 'dipped' I have mine done once a year just for the heck of it and it comes out great and lasts.

You fail to mention that Platinum scratches much easier and therefore looks more dull quicker. It's a softer metal.
Plus, its more expensive... its a rip.

Actually i did mention it....
Platinum’s best property as far as jewelry is concerned is its abrasive resistance. Platinum rings and in particular platinum claws will still be in great condition many years after the equivalent gold article is worn away. This is quite amazing when you consider that platinum is relatively soft and bends more easily than gold.
Summary of Platinum’s properties · natural white color · looks better than white gold when it is old and scratched · feels heavier than gold · will wear better and last longer than gold · is very expensive

Actually, having been to a bunch of jewelers to learn the answer to this, it actually 'dulls' - so that it is not as shiny. So, basically, you have to shine your platinum ring as much as you rodium dip your white gold ring. Hope that helps.
