people give favors at e-parties and have a first dance too? I NEVER knew that!

I didn't. Me, FH, my parents, FMIL and 2 of FH's aunts all went out to dinner.

In response to July5Bride as to why people have engagement parties, in my culture (Greek) the purpose of the e-party is the blessing of the wedding rings (bands). There is a blessing ceremony at the beginning and then a celebration that follows. It is a very important (and beautiful) tradition. I am not having a first dance but we are giving out favors. I wouldn't feel right having people attend a formal affair and not give a little something as a thank you to them for coming.

Thanks Angela for clarifying. FH is Greek Orthodox and I am Catholic. Since we have decided to have a GO wedding, we also had an e-party, where a priest came to bless our engagement rings. It was beautiful and very special to FH and I and our friends and families. Plus, giving out koufeta (candied almonds) as favors is also a GO tradition. Giving out additional favors is optional, but is a nice gesture. And yes we did have a first dance and gave our guests koufeta and favors. But that is how we wanted it. And we, our family and friends do not feel that this will take away from our actual wedding.
