I am taking FHs last name. I am sure that it will be an adjustment at work, but my clients will just have to get used to it. FH and I live together, so changing my name is important to me- since we already live together, changing my name is an official change over into his wife. Plus, I do not want to have a different last name than our children (when we have them)
I am a bit sad to see my last name go, since I have a first name no one spells correctly, and no one can spell my FHs last name correctly. So I will be a victim of misspellings for all eternity, they should write THAT into my vows

I have always been such an independent person that many people think I would keep my last name, but I asked my FH his opinion and he strongly felt that I should take his name. Because it meant so much to him I am taking his name, I guess this is an example of giving and taking in the relationship...

I am changing my name personally, but professionally I will keep my maiden name.

My FI wants me to legally change my name to his - but for my career, (I am a lawyer) i'll be using my maiden name. ARe there any other atty's out there who know if I can do this - keep my maiden name for my bar license and change my name legally to my FI?

I've changed my name to his. He has a real nice name. I changed it professionally also and it's gone well so far. Everyone is adjusting and calling me by my new name. I still have to do the DMV thing though - yikes. It's so fun to have a new name!!

I am taking his last name since I am very traditional about stuff like that. But I must say I am not very fond of his last name. I have a nice simple Irish last name and FH has a long Polish name...oh well....it's worth it.

tanbride you can't do that! sorry You have to practice under what ever name is your legal name. That is the problem. Most other professions you can do whatever you want to but not as a lawyer. The court has to ok the name change and then you have to sign all of your documents etc with your legal name.

I agree that for most modern women it is very difficult to take your husband's last name especially when many of us are establised in our careers and are getting married later in life than our mothers. I struggled with this and eventually decided to take his name though I still use mine at work.

abc707..I am highly distressed by your news! I have heard the stories from my friends but was hoping the bar would get in line with the times. So the only way I get to keep my name professionally is if I never change my name legally but I can go by Mrs. X socially but all my credit cards, driver's license, bank records, SS, will all be with my maiden name - that won't make my FI happy! Oh no....

I can't wait to change my last name. Just like Thrilled, my Father is ...well lets just say a horrible person & his last name is something I have wanted to get rid of for a long time.
