Me and FH are looking at 3 houses in Howard Beach this weekend. For those of you that live in Howard Beach, do you like the area? What areas should we avoid?

Re: Who lives in Howard Beach?
My ex used to live there so i spent a lot of time in the area - wasn't my cup of tea. But I'm a long island girl through and through (as good or bad as that may be lol) and i couldn't pic myself living there.
BUUTTTT a lot of the houses are really nice and its a pretty good location - they never had any problems in the 40 some-odd years they lived there.

FH LOOOOOVES HB!!! We intend to stay there at least 3yrs, but no more than 5yrs. You think it would be a problem commuting to LI or Manhattan?

How are you commuting? Driving? Then it should be really easy. Trains are lacking that area though. But it's a REALLY nice area, I had a lot of friends growing up who lived over there so I spent lots of time there.

Def not. my ex used to come out to LI often and he took the train - it was a pain but it worked. Driving isnt horrible but the belt ususally s u c k s all the time LOL and the conduit well that kinda s u c k s sometimes too LOL but its a quick trip to LI.
Also to the city - where my ex lived he was in walking distance of the A train and it was always a really simple trip.

Re: Who lives in Howard Beach?
That's my biggest concern. I hate traffic and the Belt can be a huge nightmare. FH was telling me that when he would commute from LI to Manhattan with the LIRR it would take 1.5 hrs. He says the commute by train from HB isn't bad, but then again he's never lived in HB so how he hell would he know that 'it isn't bad.' lol.

I am from Howard Beach, but now live in LI. I loved living there. Its like a suburb in the city. You just gotta be careful because there are parts that are prone to flooding.

Re: Who lives in Howard Beach?
I just moved out of HB - my condo is there (Lindenwood section) and its rented out now...(I moved into FH's house in south Nassau county).
I love Howard Beach - there really aren't any 'bad' areas. Old Howard Beach is the area behind Waldbaums on Cross-Bay Blvd and down by that Starbucks as you reach Far Rockaway.
Lindenwood is where all the co-ops and condos are, the exit on the right when you head south on the Cross-Bay (right before you take the Belt toward Brooklyn). The only problem w/ that area is Parking. It gets very crowded after 7 pm and you may have to park far away from your building if you cant find a spot..
Any other q's, feel free to FM me.

Did you have a hard time renting the condo? I think my FH saw pics of some condos in Lindenwood.

I live next to Howard beach. I like the area in terms of stores restaurants, etc, but I don't like a lot of the crowd. I shouldn't elaborate here or I'll get into trouble
Also, Lindenwood is very diff from the rest of Howard Beach

Re: Who lives in Howard Beach?
yes, it took me almost a year to rent it out because I had trouble findling GOOD tenants (and even the ones I have now I remain skeptical about because they were late giving me rent last month!). I am in a 1 bedroom but the kitchen is REALLY tiny...so already, I know I am going to have trouble re-selling it (the apt is basically the size of a studio but has a really large bedroom).
The upside is that the building is one of the best in Lindenwood (everything was renovated, new roof, new laundry room, new fitness room) and is right next to the big Waldbaums shopping center on 153rd Ave.
I would still be living in HB if I hadnt met FH and gotten engaged. I bought the place in late 2006 and only lived there until late 2008.

I think I know what you mean by the type of people inhabiting Lindenwood but I def think its more a problem that encapsulates all of Queens (except for maybe some tiny pockets throughout). As long as the property values don't drop drastically, I won't really be upset about that.
My parents live in Woodhaven and when they bought their house in the early 1990s, the neighborhood was SOOO different. Now it seems like 1/2 of Brooklyn (like the East NY section) has slowly moved into south Queens all the way across to Jamaica. Not that its bad, but the 'flavor' of the area isn't the same as before...
