WHOA More layoffs and tax increase. Watching news

A budget deal reached in Albany, NY taxes going up. Sales tax going up an eigth of a percent, and residential taxes going up.

Tha mayor said its the right thing to do.

Pataki is vetoing it.

The mayor is going to meet with the govener to talk with him. The state assembly passed the tax increase.

Sanitation workers, teacher aides, and city workers got the pink slip today.

FI's aunt and his dad's wife is a teacher aid.

3000 city employees received the pink slip, raised taxes and more needs to be done

So far:
1800 school aids
650 sanitation workers
300 correction officers
150 in fire department

My brother may be losing his job too (Sanitation), it s u c k s becuase he missed the cutoff by one month....Anyone hired before July 2000 was safe, he was hired August 2000

Everything is going up! Sales tax, property tax, income tax, bridges & tunnels, subway and bus fare!! It's ridiculous.
Our salaries aren't going up that's for sure! How the heck are people supposed to afford to live anymore - ugh I'm so disgusted

I think it's pretty scary! So many lives are going to be effected I'm in school for teaching, I hope it gets better by the time I get out (which is not for 1 1/2 years) FH is also having MORE layoffs at Verizon.

I hope things get better soon

The world economy is terrible, the US economy and NY specifically is still reeling from terrorist attacks and war. Both DH and I are thankfully still employed but my company has had 2 rounds of layoffs (about 50 people plus an office in MD closed) since September. I just got my annual raise which is about the rate of inflation - much lower than yrs past. But I'm lucky to have a job -right? Every time we see the head of HR - we all get nervous. I am seriously considering moving south. Hopefully things will get better.

That's weird the mayor approved that, b/c he was ALL for and still is for the commuter tax. He didn't even want a state tax increase. Make up your mind already!
As if I don't have anything else to worry about with my 25% hike in my LIRR monthly.

Its going to be even harder for first time home buyers. At this rate we may never get a house!!
Chippa can I come to FL too?

Are you kidding me about the free transfers? I take an express bus in everyday ($3.00) and now I have to pay to take the train??? W T F?????????

And the fare is going up to $4.00....so its gonna cost $9.00 a day to get to work.....for another couple of bucks I can take my car in and park in the garage!

And I wonder why I live in NY???

What's killing me the most is that every time we turn around more people are losing their jobs and something becomes more expensive. I just do not believe one word the mayor says!!

All this nickel and diming is going to destroy the city and return it to that dismal scary place it was in the 70's- early 80's. Already crime is on the rise, businesses are moving out of the city, people are moving out of the city, etc.

About the bus transfers, I looked on the MTA site and it looks like they are still free.

I can't believe they're doing away with the free transfer from bus to train!! No wonder everyone's moving to FL. One of my BMs just put her house on the market - her DH sounds like you, Chippa - he hates NY - he's done with it so they're moving on out...
